Arcus Aquavit

Norway's largest akvavit producer, whose flagship is matured at sea in sherry casks. Arcus' famous Linie Akvavit crosses the equator twice on the way to and from Australia in the ship's cargo hold, a tradition that began by chance in the 1800s and has since become the brand's signature. The motion and temperature shifts of the voyage give the akvavit a maturation no land-based warehouse can imitate.

A fixture on the Norwegian festive table since the 1950s — Gilde Taffel is the aquavit many Norwegians grew up with at Christmas and celebrations.

    The Expert's Description

Arcus Gilde Taffel is a Norwegian aquavit bottled at 37.5% ABV.

The aquavit belongs to the Gilde range from Arcus and has been part of the formal Norwegian festive table since 1957. It's aged for 3-6 months in old oak casks, which contribute little colour or flavour on their own but give the spices time to settle and knit together.

The result is a medium-bodied aquavit with clear caraway character, supported by anise and citrus.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

    Citrus peel, anise and caraway.

    Palate

Medium-bodied with clear caraway and anise.

    Finish

Northern Norway voted its favourite into existence when Maquavit was born — an aquavit shaped by public taste rather than a single master distiller's idea.

    The Expert's Description

Arcus Maquavit is a Norwegian aquavit bottled at 40% ABV.

The aquavit is based on a classic Lysholm recipe, though its final composition was decided by a jury of northern Norwegians who worked through roughly 8,000 submitted suggestions for what a true "aquavit of Northern Norway" should taste like. The result is cask-aged for 5 years.

The long cask ageing gives the aquavit a deep golden colour and a round, full character with clear notes of chocolate, vanilla and sherry.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

    Chocolate, vanilla and sherry.

    Palate

Full and round, with spice and cask character.

About Arcus Akvavit

Arcus is Norway's largest producer of aquavit, known for brands such as Linie Aquavit, which matures during sea voyages to the other side of the globe and back. For the newcomer, Arcus is a safe, classic way into Norwegian akvavit. For the collector, the Linie tradition is the whole point: tracking which ship the akvavit crossed the equator on, and how long the voyage took, has become a fixed part of the bottle's story and collector value.

History & background

The tradition of sending the akvavit on a sea voyage began by chance in the 1800s, when unsold barrels were shipped to the East Indies and back - and turned out to taste markedly better after the journey, a discovery Arcus has since made a fixed part of production.

Production & style

The aquavit is distilled from potatoes or grain and spiced with caraway and other herbs before maturing in sherry casks, often during sea transport.

Signature style

Spicy, Caraway, Sherry-Toned
The flavour is spicy with caraway, and a light sherry-toned sweetness from the cask maturation.
