Lysholm Snaps

Lysholm is the name still associated with Norwegian linje aquavit, the distinctive style where the spirit sails across the equator in wooden casks before returning home to Norway. Sweetness, spice and cask warmth meet in a glass that carries an entire maritime history within it. This is aquavit that has been around the world before it reached your table.

  • Golden aquavit bottle with classic understated Nordic label
    Item no.: 222278654231473-2021-08-0060

Named after a Trondheim trader who set an entire aquavit tradition adrift over 200 years ago. Milder than its siblings, but carrying the same story in its blood.

    The Expert's Description

Fru Catharina Lysholm Norsk Akvavit is a Norwegian aquavit at 38% ABV, part of the Lysholm family.

The aquavit is named after Catharina Lysholm, an enterprising businesswoman who, together with her brother Heinrich, ran a trading house in Trondheim in the early 1800s. On her initiative, the ship Trondhjems Prøve sailed to the East Indies in 1805-07, a voyage that was later found to have matured the aquavit on board. That discovery laid the foundation for the whole Linie tradition the rest of the Lysholm family builds on. Fru Catharina is the mildest of the aquavits, with a lower strength and a softer, rounder character.

Twice the casks cross the equator, rocking in a cargo hold. The sea does what no warehouse can: it gives time a rolling, restless pulse.

    The Expert's Description

Lysholm Linie Matured at Sea is a Norwegian aquavit at 41.5% ABV, matured according to the classic Linie tradition.

The aquavit is distilled from Norwegian potatoes on pot stills with a spice blend led by caraway and star anise. It then rests in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks that are sent on a months-long sea voyage, crossing the equator twice before returning home. The tradition dates back to 1805, when the Lysholm family shipped a cargo of potato aquavit to the East Indies; interest there was limited, so the cargo sailed home again, and it was only then that the voyage was found to have dramatically improved the flavour. Every drop of Linie has made the same journey ever since.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Caraway and star anise lead, with finer touches of vanilla and sherry.

    Palate

Unusually smooth and well balanced, with spiced warmth and a clear cask influence from the sherry.

    Finish

Long and calm, closing on spice and oak.

    The Expert's Description

Lysholm Throndhjems Aquavit is a cask-aged Norwegian aquavit at 41.5% ABV.

The aquavit was developed for Trondheim's 1000-year anniversary, celebrated in 1997. The Throndhjems Aquavit Club was behind the development, and in December 1996 people queued for hours to get hold of the numbered bottles, then named Jubileumsaquavit. In 1998, the name was changed to Throndhjems Aquavit after Danish interests raised an objection at the EU court over the name Jubileumsaquavit. The aquavit is cask-aged for 36 months and carries a historic link to Jørgen B. Lysholm, who founded his distillery in 1821 at Lysholms Minde near Trondheim and is regarded as the originator of the entire Linie aquavit concept.

About Lysholm Snaps

Lysholm Snaps is a Norwegian aquavit in the classic Linje style, where the spirit has traditionally travelled by ship across the equator and back during cask maturation. For the newcomer it's a warm, spiced and accessible entry into Norwegian aquavit; for the connoisseur, the Linje tradition is the core of the interest, a production method that gives each bottle its own unique cask-ageing story, complete with the ship's route and the date it crossed the equator.

History & Background

The Lysholm name is closely tied to the Norwegian Linje aquavit tradition, which began in the 1800s when it was discovered that aquavit sent by sailing ship to the East and back to Norway developed a markedly better flavour from the long sea voyage. The casks were stored in the ships' holds, where the motion, temperature shifts and salty sea air were believed to speed up the maturation process. The tradition lives on today, with certain Linje aquavits still shipped across the equator twice before being bottled and sold.

Production & Style

The aquavit is distilled from potatoes and spiced with typical Nordic herbs such as caraway and anise, before being aged in casks during the long sea voyage.

Signature Style

Spicy, Maritime, Round
The flavor offers a spicy character with notes of caraway and anise, softened by the long cask aging at sea.
