Westward Whiskey

In Portland, Oregon, where the rain falls almost constantly and the coffee culture is as serious as the beer culture, Westward Whiskey was born from a conviction that American single malt deserves its own voice. Instead of copying Scotland, they brew their whiskey the way an ale brewery would brew beer. That yields a rich, fruity character unlike anything else.

Oregon's famed Pinot Noir wine casks add fruity depth to this single malt.

    Expert description

Westward Pinot Noir American Single Malt Whiskey is finished in casks that previously held Pinot Noir from Oregon's celebrated wine region, bottled at 45%. Westward Whiskey was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 2004 by Christian Krogstad under the name House Spirits Distillery, rooted in the city's strong craft brewing tradition. The whiskey is brewed like a pale ale, double pot-distilled, and matured in new charred American oak barrels, giving an expression that draws as much on brewing craft as on classic whiskey tradition.

About Westward

The Westward distillery, located in Portland, Oregon, is known for its pioneering approach to American single malt whiskey. The distillery is dedicated to craft quality and uses only the finest local ingredients to create its unique whiskies. For the newcomer, Westward is a rich, fruity and accessible entry into American single malt; for the connoisseur, the interest lies in Westward using ale yeast strains and brewing methods borrowed from the craft beer industry instead of traditional whisky techniques, giving it a markedly different character from both Scotch and other American whiskey.

History & Background

Westward Whiskey was founded in 2004 in Portland by Christian Krogstad, who came from a craft brewing background and wanted to carry the same craftsmanship philosophy into whiskey production. The distillery helped define the 'American single malt' category, which was only officially recognised as its own whiskey type in the US in 2019. Westward brews its whiskey using ale yeast and matures it in new, charred American oak, a method markedly different from both Scotch single malt and traditional bourbon.

Production & Style

The whisky is distilled from 100% malted barley using brewer's yeast rather than traditional distiller's yeast, giving a more ester-rich, fruity distillate matured in new American oak casks.

Signature Style

Fruity, Malty, West Coast
Tropical fruit and a clear malt character from the beer fermentation give an American single malt tasting more of Portland's brewing culture than of Kentucky.
