Balcones Whisky

Under a bridge in Waco, Texas, sat a disused welding shop where an entirely new chapter of American whiskey history began in 2009. Balcones became the state's first distillery since Prohibition, and it did so with a sharp break from tradition: blue corn instead of wheat, unfamiliar barrel types, and a stubborn will to do things differently. Six years later, the company had outgrown the old bridge and grown into one of Texas's most talked-about distilleries.

About Balcones

Balcones is Texas's whiskey pioneer, born in a former welding shop under a bridge in Waco in 2009 as the state's first legal distillery since Prohibition. The house's signature is blue corn instead of the wheat traditionally used in American whiskey, giving it an earthy, characterful profile distinct from Kentucky bourbon. For beginners, Balcones offers an exciting departure from the classic bourbon expression, while collectors closely follow the house's annual limited special releases, produced by a distillery that went from garage project to Forbes-covered success story in under a decade.

History & Background

Balcones was founded in 2009 in a former welding shop under a bridge in Waco, Texas, as the state's first legal distillery since Prohibition. Just six years later, in 2015, the company moved into a significantly larger facility, allowing production to increase to around 350,000 liters of whisky a year. The young distillery quickly forged its own identity by using blue corn instead of the wheat typically found in American whiskey, and won a long string of awards for its Texas Single Malt and Texas Rye releases. At its 10th anniversary in 2018, Balcones was featured in Forbes as one of the most notable new names in American whiskey.

Production & Style

The whisky is distilled from, among other things, blue corn and matured in the extreme Texas climate, where large temperature swings markedly accelerate cask influence.

Signature Style

Intense, Corn-Sweet, Powerful
A pronounced corn sweetness from the blue corn meets an intense, quickly achieved cask character – a whisky clearly tasting of its warm Texas home.

Did You Know?

Texas's extreme day-to-night temperature swings make whisky mature significantly faster than in cool Kentucky – an effect Balcones deliberately exploits in its style.
