Connoisseurs Choice Whisky

Connoisseurs Choice was the name that in the mid-1960s dared to do something unheard of: bottle single malt from distilleries no one at the time sold as anything but blend ingredients. Gordon & MacPhail unwittingly created an entire category, long before "single malt" became a household term.

  • Ardbeg 1994/2004 Connoisseurs Choice Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottle
    Item no.: 505956-105768-6

An independent bottling from one of the whisky world's oldest and most respected bottlers, a world apart from Ardbeg's own labels.

    Expert Review

Ardbeg 1994/2004 Connoisseurs Choice 10 Year Old is an Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky bottled by Gordon & MacPhail at 40%.

Connoisseurs Choice is Gordon & MacPhail's classic series of independent bottlings, where the whisky is distilled at the named distillery but selected and bottled by the bottler itself. This release was distilled in 1994 and bottled in 2004 after 10 years of maturation, giving a different expression than Ardbeg's own official releases.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Classic Islay peat at a calmer, more restrained pace than the more powerful official bottlings, with a light maritime freshness.

    Palate

Gentle smoke and peat balanced by a dry, malt-forward sweetness, characteristic of Gordon & MacPhail's style.

    Finish

Mild and dry, with a lingering smoky finish.

    Item no.: 505956-759824-20

Distilled in 1987, bottled in 1999. Between those two dates Bladnoch changed hands, fell silent and was restarted — and the whisky simply waited in the cask, none the wiser.

Please note: The bottle is sold without its original box.

    Expert description

Bladnoch 1987/1999 Connoisseurs Choice 12 Years is a Single Lowland Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 40% by Gordon & MacPhail.

Connoisseurs Choice is Gordon & MacPhail's oldest and best known series of independent bottlings, and the early releases with the map label are sought after in their own right today. The series has historically been the route to whisky from distilleries that were either closed or released nothing themselves.

The 1987 Bladnoch spirit dates from the years under Bell's and later United Distillers, that is, before the modern rebuilding of the distillery. It is a pale, classic Lowland style that would hardly be made the same way now.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Pale and clean with grain, hay and lemon peel. Given time, pear and a light waxiness come forward.

    Palate

Soft and dry with malt, white fruit and a touch of almond. 40% keeps it light, but there is a maturity in the middle that only time provides.

    Finish

Short to medium, dry and grainy with a trace of oak.

    Investment potential

High. A vintage from a period that will not return, released in a series with collector value of its own. Older Connoisseurs Choice bottles with map labels have become a category in themselves.

Gordon & MacPhail began buying casks as early as 1895 and has stored whisky in its own warehouse in Elgin ever since. The company today also owns the Benromach distillery.

The label shows a map of Scotland with the distillery marked. It is a detail that now dates the bottle instantly — and makes it as recognisable to collectors as the whisky inside.

    Expert description

Bladnoch 1987/1999 Gordon & MacPhail Connoisseurs Choice 12 Years is a Single Lowland Malt Whisky bottled at 40%.

The release carries the map label Gordon & MacPhail used on Connoisseurs Choice for a number of years and retired in the 2000s. The whisky was distilled in 1987 and bottled in 1999 after twelve years in cask.

Bladnoch was producing in that period under Bell's and United Distillers, and the spirit is made in the pale, classic Lowland style. After 1993 the distillery stood idle for long stretches, which has left the 1980s vintages thin on the ground.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Clean and grainy with hay, apple blossom and a pale citrus note.

    Palate

Soft, dry and light. Malt, green fruit and a fine waxy texture typical of the period.

    Finish

Medium and dry with grain and a faint suggestion of oak.

Gordon & MacPhail runs its own cask programme and has for decades supplied casks to the distilleries it buys from. That is one reason the house's older bottlings often carry pronounced cask influence.

About Connoisseurs Choice

Connoisseurs Choice was launched by Gordon & MacPhail in the mid-1960s as one of the very first series of single malt whisky, at a time when most of the featured distillates weren't available as anything other than blend components. The series is still known for its exclusive nature, with rare and sought-after single malts from distilleries across Scotland, often aged in Gordon & MacPhail's own well-regarded Speyside cask stocks. Collectors regard the series as one of the oldest and most historically significant in independent bottling, while newcomers can use it as a reliable entry into authentic Scotch single malt.

History & Background

Gordon & MacPhail, founded in 1895 in Elgin as a grocer specialising in whisky, took the then-unusual step in the mid-1960s of launching a series of single malts under the name Connoisseurs Choice. At the time, the category of "single malt" barely existed as a commercial concept, and many of the whiskies featured in the series would otherwise have ended up solely as anonymous components in blends. This early venture has made Gordon & MacPhail one of the most historically significant players in Scotch whisky history, and Connoisseurs Choice is still released today as a living connection to the period when single malt truly began to emerge as its own category.

History & Background

The series was one of the first of its kind and has historically made many closed or rare distilleries available to the public.

Production & Style

The whisky is distilled at the named distillery and then selected cask by cask by Gordon & MacPhail.

Signature Style

Varied, Authentic, Cask-Driven
The flavor varies by source distillery, but a clean, classic cask character is common.
