Berry´s Own Selection Whisky

Berry Bros & Rudd has sold wine and spirits from the same London address since 1698, long before anyone had coined the term "single malt". The house has supplied the British royal family since the reign of George III, and that same eye for quality now guides its hunt for Scotland's finest whisky casks.

  • Benrinnes 2006 Berry Bros Single Cask Speyside Malt Whisky bottle
    Item no.: 22227865449-18224

One cask, ten years, and one of London's oldest wine merchants as the sender. Berry Bros & Rudd have traded spirits from the same address on St James's Street since 1698, and their whisky range shows the hand of people who have had plenty of time to learn how to taste.

    The expert's description

Benrinnes 2006/2017 Berry Bros 10 years is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in a single cask and bottled at 46 %.

Cask no. 309927 was filled in 2006 and emptied in 2017 for Berry's Own Selection. The whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured, and 46 % was chosen because that strength keeps the texture intact without drowning the spirit.

Ten years is long enough for the heavy Benrinnes distillate to settle its fruit and vanilla, but not so long that the oak takes over. The distillery's own character stands at the front here — which is precisely the point of a single cask.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fresh pear, lemon peel and vanilla custard. Underneath sits a lightly waxy note and a hint of freshly cut grain.

    Palate

Oily and malty with yellow apples, honeydew melon and a sprinkle of white pepper. The 46 % gives a fine mouthfeel without burning.

    Finish

Medium long, clean and lightly spiced with malt biscuit and a touch of citrus oil.

    Item no.: 22227865449-18227

Berry Bros & Rudd has traded wine and spirits from the same London address since 1698. When they pick a single cask of Craigellachie, it is not by accident.

    Expert description

Craigellachie 2007/2017 Berry Bros 9 years is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky drawn from a single cask at 46%.

The cask carries the number 900640, was filled in 2007 and bottled in 2017. The release belongs to Berry's Own Selection, the house range of single cask whisky where the distillery character is left unadjusted. Nine years is young for Craigellachie, but that is exactly why the meaty, mineral style from the worm tub condensing comes through so clearly before the cask starts to dominate.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fresh and young. Green apple, pear and pineapple, with cereal, vanilla and a flinty mineral note underneath.

    Palate

Oily and spiced. Citrus, malt and baked fruit, with the sulphurous edge as a dry undercurrent. The 46% gives bite without tightening.

    Finish

Medium and dry, with cereal, oak and a lightly smoked mineral note.

  • Bottle of Glenlossie Berry Bros 23 Year Old Speyside Single Malt whisky
    Item no.: 22227865449-7042

Twenty-three years is a long time to sit still in a Scottish warehouse – long enough for a barely-known Speyside malt like Glenlossie to become something quite different from where it started. Berry Bros & Rudd has captured exactly that moment.

    Expert's Description

Glenlossie 1992/2016 Berry Bros 23 Year Old is a Single Speyside Malt Whisky bottled at 46%.

Distilled in 1992, the whisky was sourced by Berry Bros & Rudd, Britain's oldest wine and spirits merchant, which has traded rare casks under the Berry's Own Selection label since its founding in 1698. This Glenlossie comes from a single cask, No. 3473, and wears its 23 years openly – both in colour and in its mature, rounded character.

Glenlossie rarely reaches the world as a standalone single malt, since most of its output goes into blends. A release this old from an independent bottler is therefore a rare chance to meet the distillery at its most mature.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Waxy honey and dried apricot sit over a lightly nutty malt. Given time in the glass, a faint soapy, floral note emerges too, typical of older Speyside malts.

    Palate

Soft and round, with toffee, lightly toasted almonds and a hint of old oak polish. The 23 years have smoothed every edge, without the whisky losing its cereal core.

    Finish

Dry and faintly tannic, with a lingering honeyed note and a distant whisper of spiced wood.

Nine years is young in Glenlossie's world, but even here you can sense why the distillery is so prized by blenders. Berry Bros & Rudd has captured the fresh, direct side of the whisky before time got to round off anything.

    Expert's Description

Glenlossie 2007/2017 Berry Bros 9 Year Old is a Single Speyside Malt Whisky bottled at 46%.

Distilled in 2007 and bottled in 2017 by Berry Bros & Rudd under the Berry's Own Selection label, from a single cask, No. 10103, at just nine years old this is one of the youngest Glenlossie releases in our range, showing the distillery's clean, cereal character more clearly than the older bottlings.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fresh barley malt, green apple and a light honeyed sweetness. No obvious cask influence yet – this is clean, young Glenlossie.

    Palate

Crisp and direct, with cereal, pear and a light peppery spice. The texture is lighter than its older siblings, but still with good body.

    Finish

Short to medium, dry and cereal-driven, with a last hint of apple skin.

Christmas at Berry Bros & Rudd usually means a handful of sharply chosen single casks, and in 2023 Linkwood was one of them. The cask was selected by Doug McIvor, one of the house's most experienced tasters.

    The expert's description

Linkwood 2010/2023 Berry Bros 13 år Single Cask Speyside Malt Whisky 52,1% is a Single Speyside Malt Scotch Whisky, matured in Pedro Ximénez sherry hogshead, cask no. #301233 and bottled at 52.1%.

The whisky was distilled in 2010 and given a finishing maturation in a Pedro Ximénez sherry hogshead before being bottled in 2023 as a limited number of bottles for Berry Bros & Rudd's Christmas range. The PX cask adds notes of stewed apricot, caramel and spiced oak to Linkwood's usually light, floral character.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Stewed apricot, buttery biscuit and rich caramel with a hint of spiced oak.

    Palate

Rich and complex with berries, sultanas and chocolate-covered walnuts.

About Berry Bros & Rudd Whisky

Berry Bros & Rudd is Britain's oldest wine and spirits merchant, founded in 1698 in London, and one of the world's most respected independent whisky bottlers, holding two royal warrants from the British royal family. The firm's "Own Selection" series consists of carefully chosen single-cask and blended malt releases representing the character of different Scottish regions, selected with the same expertise the house has applied to wine for over three centuries. For collectors, the 300-plus years of history and royal connections lend particular prestige to the bottles, while newcomers meet a reliable quality guarantee from one of the industry's oldest names.

History & Background

The firm was founded in 1698 at No. 3, St James's Street in London, where it still stands today, originally as a grocer's that later specialised in wine and spirits. Berry Bros & Rudd has supplied the British court since the reign of King George III and today holds royal warrants from both the Queen and the Prince of Wales, a rarity even among Britain's oldest trading houses. The firm was among the first to release independent whisky bottlings under its own name and has over generations built a portfolio that today spans everything from single casks to its own blend, Cutty Sark.

History & Background

The company was founded in 1698 in London and remains a family-owned business that has, over more than 300 years, built a reputation as one of the world's most respected wine and spirits merchants.

Production & Style

Berry Bros & Rudd bottles whisky from a wide range of Scottish distilleries, often as single cask releases selected by the company's experienced tasting panels.

Signature Style

Versatile, Distillery-Driven, Classic
The taste varies considerably by distillery, but a high quality standard and classic British style is common.
