Twenty-three years is a long time to sit still in a Scottish warehouse – long enough for a barely-known Speyside malt like Glenlossie to become something quite different from where it started. Berry Bros & Rudd has captured exactly that moment.

    Expert's Description

Glenlossie 1992/2016 Berry Bros 23 Year Old is a Single Speyside Malt Whisky bottled at 46%.

Distilled in 1992, the whisky was sourced by Berry Bros & Rudd, Britain's oldest wine and spirits merchant, which has traded rare casks under the Berry's Own Selection label since its founding in 1698. This Glenlossie comes from a single cask, No. 3473, and wears its 23 years openly – both in colour and in its mature, rounded character.

Glenlossie rarely reaches the world as a standalone single malt, since most of its output goes into blends. A release this old from an independent bottler is therefore a rare chance to meet the distillery at its most mature.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Waxy honey and dried apricot sit over a lightly nutty malt. Given time in the glass, a faint soapy, floral note emerges too, typical of older Speyside malts.

    Palate

Soft and round, with toffee, lightly toasted almonds and a hint of old oak polish. The 23 years have smoothed every edge, without the whisky losing its cereal core.

    Finish

Dry and faintly tannic, with a lingering honeyed note and a distant whisper of spiced wood.

Frequently asked questions about Glenlossie 1992/2016 Berry Bros 23 Year Old

    What makes this Glenlossie special?

It's a 23-year-old single cask release from Berry Bros & Rudd, one of Britain's oldest and most respected spirits merchants – a rare age for a distillery that's almost never seen alone.

    Is this whisky smoky?

No, Glenlossie is an unpeated Speyside malt, and the 23 years in cask have given it a soft, honeyed character with no smoke.

How does a 23-year-old Glenlossie compare to the younger releases?

Age has rounded the whisky and added wax, honey and lightly nutty tones, where the younger Glenlossie releases are more cereal-driven and direct.

    What is Berry's Own Selection?

It's Berry Bros & Rudd's own label for independently bottled single cask whiskies, chosen by the firm's spirits team since the company was founded in 1698.

    Is this whisky worth it?

Its age and tiny outturn make this Glenlossie a rare bottle – the value lies in the combination of a little-known distillery, a respected bottler and unusually mature ageing.

    What glass suits it best?

A nosing glass best highlights the honey and wax notes on the nose and makes it easier to follow the long, dry finish.
