  • Bottle of Caorunn Small Batch Scottish Gin from Balmenach
    Item no.: 2222786539-1008

Deep inside Balmenach whisky distillery in Speyside sits a copper chamber found nowhere else in the world. Here, among whisky casks and malt bins, Caorunn is born - named after the Gaelic word for rowan.

    Expert's description

Caorunn Small Batch Scottish Gin is a Scottish Premium Gin distilled at Balmenach Distillery in Speyside and bottled at 41.8%.

Caorunn has been handcrafted in small batches at Balmenach since 2009 and is distilled in the world's only working copper Berry Chamber, housed inside the whisky distillery itself.

Eleven botanicals, including juniper, coriander, cassia bark, angelica root, lemon and orange peel, are loaded into the chamber's four trays alongside five Scottish 'Celtic' botanicals: rowan berry, heather, dandelion, bog myrtle and Coul Blush apple. Vapour from the spirit passes through the trays over several days, picking up the aromas.

Each batch totals just 1,000 litres, giving every bottle a tight, handcrafted character.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The nose is fresh and aromatic with ripe citrus, apple and a hint of wild berry, backed by a soft herbal note.

    Palate

The palate is crisp with classic juniper, spiced coriander and a light sweetness from the Coul Blush apple.

    Finish

The finish is clean and refreshing, with a last trace of heather and rowan berry.

The small bottle carries the same curious, Victorian spirit as the original: two distillates, cucumber and Bulgarian rose, just in a size that fits in a pocket or serves as a taster.

    Expert's description

Hendrick's Gin Miniature is a Scottish gin distilled at William Grant & Sons in Girvan and bottled at 41.4% in a 5cl bottle.

The gin is crafted by Lesley Gracie, who combines spirit from two very different stills: a traditional pot still from 1860, built by Bennett, Sons & Shears, and a Carter-Head still from 1948, of which only a few exist in the world.

After distillation, essence of cucumber and Bulgarian rose is added, giving Hendrick's its distinctive, unorthodox flavour profile that breaks with the traditional juniper-heavy style.

The miniature bottle is ideal as a gift or for trying Hendrick's distinctive style before investing in the full-size bottle.

    Item no.: 2222786539-1036

When Hendrick's launched in 1999, it broke every expectation of what a gin should be. Instead of citrus and spice, distiller Lesley Gracie filled the bottle with cucumber and rose, changing what modern gin could taste like.

    Expert's description

Hendrick's Gin is a Scottish Small Batch Premium Gin distilled in Girvan and bottled at 41.4%.

The gin is distilled on two very different stills used simultaneously: a Bennett still from 1860, which produces a full, robust distillate, and a rare 1948 Carter Head still, which uses vapour infusion to create a lighter, more delicate spirit. The two distillates are then blended together.

Both stills were bought at auction in 1966 by Hendrick's founder Charles Gordon from the closed-down Taplow distillery in London.

What truly defines Hendrick's is the infusion of Bulgarian rose petals and Dutch cucumber into the finished spirit, a step that redefined what modern gin could be.

Beinn an Tuirc means 'the hill of the wild boar' in Gaelic and is the highest point on the Kintyre peninsula. Just below the hill, in a converted piggery on Torrisdale Estate, this gin is distilled with the whole estate as its larder.

    Expert's description

Kintyre Botanical Gin is a Scottish London Dry Gin distilled by Beinn an Tuirc Distillers on Torrisdale Estate and bottled at 43%.

The distillery began production in June 2017 on Torrisdale Estate, owned by the Macalister Hall family since 1872. The building and still are powered directly by the estate's own hydro-electric scheme, making it one of Scotland's first distilleries of its kind.

The gin is distilled from 12 botanicals, including juniper, cassia, coriander, lemon, orange, liquorice, almond, angelica root, orris root and cubeb berry, joined by sheep sorrel and Icelandic moss foraged directly on the estate to keep food miles down.

Using locally foraged Icelandic moss and sheep sorrel is a deliberate choice that ties the gin more closely to the Kintyre landscape than most other Scottish gins.

On a farm in Fetternear in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Andrew Smith and Chris Reid head out into the fields and woodland edges to forage birch sap, wood sorrel and beech leaves for their gin. The name comes from Andrew's dog, who followed him on every distillery visit.

    Expert's description

Little Brown Dog Aberdeenshire Foraged Gin is a Scottish gin made from a blend of foraged and bought-in botanicals and bottled at 43%.

The gin is made by Little Brown Dog Spirits, a small distillery and independent bottler founded in 2018 by Andrew Smith and Chris Reid on a farm in Fetternear. Alongside bought-in botanicals such as juniper from Italy, coriander from France, angelica root from Belgium and orris root from Italy, they forage birch sap, wood sorrel, beech leaves, rhubarb, parsnip and some of the juniper themselves, directly on the farm.

The distillery is built around full traceability: a QR code on the back label shows exactly where each foraged or grown ingredient came from on the farm.

The result is a contemporary Scottish dry gin, where piney juniper meets citrus and floral notes from the local plants.

  • Bottle of Makar Oak Wood Cask Aged Gin from Scotland
    Item no.: 2222786539-1803

Named Scotland's Best Matured Gin, this expression takes Makar's classic dry gin and lets it rest in oak until it takes on an entirely new character.

    Expert's description

Makar Oak Wood Cask Aged Gin is a Scottish cask-aged gin from the Glasgow Distillery Company, bottled at 43%.

The gin starts life as Makar Original Dry and is then matured for ten weeks in small, handmade 50-litre casks made from virgin European oak.

The cask maturation gives the gin a golden colour, a new layered flavour with distinct smoky notes, and a spicy finish not found in the unaged expression.

The eight botanicals from Makar's base recipe, juniper, angelica root, liquorice root, coriander seed, lemon peel, rosemary, black pepper and cassia bark, still form the core, but emerge more complex after time in wood.

The gin won Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and has been named Scotland's Best Matured Gin.
