Imperial Whisky

Imperial was founded in 1897 and named in honour of the coronation of Russian Tsar Alexander III - a name that promised grandeur but never quite delivered on it. The distillery closed and reopened several times through the 20th century before finally falling silent in 1998. In 2013 the buildings were demolished to make way for the new Dalmunach distillery, and Imperial now exists only as a bottled memory.

About Imperial Whisky

Imperial was a Speyside distillery, named in honor of the coronation of Tsar Alexander III, which closed for good in 2013 and was later demolished.

History & background

The distillery was built in 1897 by Thomas Mackenzie, the same man behind Dailuaine, and the name was meant to signal grandeur during a period of optimistic growth in the whisky industry. The reality proved far more turbulent: Imperial closed shortly after construction due to a market crash, then opened and closed repeatedly over the following century depending on demand. The final closure came in 1998, and in 2013 the empty buildings were demolished to make way for Chivas Brothers' new Dalmunach distillery, making Imperial one of Speyside's permanently vanished names.

Production & style

The whisky was distilled using classic Speyside methods and aged in oak casks, with a style that was typically full-bodied and sweet.

Signature style

Full-Bodied, Sweet, Fruity
The flavor offers a full-bodied, sweet character with clear fruity notes.
