Inchgower Whisky

Inchgower is Speyside's rarely seen coastal distillery, tucked right by the fishing town of Buckie at the mouth of the River Spey. Most of its drops disappear straight into famous blends, but the few single malt releases that escape offer a surprising, salty edge.

    Item no.: 22227865471-300
Inchgower 14 years Flora & Fauna Single Speyside Malt Whisky 43%

In 1992, the then United Distillers (now called Diageo and the world's largest spirits company) started the Flora & Fauna series, which at the time consisted of 26 different versions of Scotch Single Malt whisky to show the great differences in Scotland's whisky regions. Bottled at 43% for most of the bottles, but some were also bottled at Cask Strength, i.e. full cask strength, and some versions also came in wooden boxes.

In Buckie in Speyside you will find Inchgower, which is especially known as an important component in Bell's blended. Golden with ripe pear notes in the aroma. Nice texture with lots of toffee and vanilla on the palate. Nice structure and a nice, long and spicy finish

About Inchgower

Inchgower is one of Speyside's lesser-known names, mainly because the bulk of its production has historically ended up in blends rather than its own bottled releases. That's a shame, because the distillery's location near the sea at Buckie gives the whisky a maritime, almost salty character that sets it apart from the more classic, sweet Speyside styles found further inland. For the curious collector, Inchgower is therefore one of those single malts that can pleasantly surprise, precisely because it doesn't fit the expected mould for the region.

History & Background

The distillery was founded in 1871 by Alexander Wilson & Co. under the name 'The Great Distillery of Inchgower' and was originally meant to reuse buildings and equipment from the defunct Tochieneal Distillery. Following Alexander Wilson & Co.'s bankruptcy, the distillery was bought by Buckie Town Council in 1936, before being sold on two years later to Arthur Bell and Sons for a mere £3,000. In the 1960s, Bell's carried out extensive renovations and installed two extra stills, doubling capacity to just under two million litres a year, and Inchgower became a staple in Bell's own blend.

Production & Style

Inchgower's proximity to the sea at Buckie gives the distillate a lightly salted, maritime tone, reinforced by the local climate during maturation. The whisky is distilled in traditional pot stills and matured primarily in bourbon casks, preserving a bright, clean character with the salty edge as its most distinctive trait.

Signature Style

Salty, Maritime, Light
The flavour offers a surprisingly salty, maritime character with notes of malt and a hint of sea breeze, a profile that stands apart from the classic Speyside image.

Did You Know?

Despite sitting in the heart of Speyside, Inchgower tastes more of the sea than of the sweet, fruity Speyside profile usually associated with the region, a direct effect of its coastal location at Buckie.
