El Dorado Rum

El Dorado is Guyana's liquid gold, distilled on wooden stills found nowhere else on earth. The name is borrowed from the myth of the lost city that lured explorers deep into the jungle — and the rum itself, some say, finally made good on that legend's promise.

  • Round bottle of dark golden rum with gold-decorated El Dorado label
    Item no.: 22227865395-0

Seven years running this rum won gold at the Caribbean Rum Taste Test – a rare consistency for a 12 year old release.

    Expert description

El Dorado 12 Year is a Demerara Rum from Guyana, matured for at least 12 years in oak casks and bottled at 40%.

The rum is distilled by Demerara Distillers at the Diamond distillery, where several historic styles of molasses-based rum from the region's former plantations are carried forward in modern production. El Dorado 12 Year is a blend representing the classic, smooth Demerara style, where the molasses base gives a natural dark sweetness without the need for heavy additives.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Lush tropical fruit and spice with honey and dark sugar, rich caramel and toffee, followed by mango and banana, plus a light vanilla note and a hint of nutmeg and cinnamon.

    Palate

Round, smooth and full-bodied with brown sugar and molasses upfront, moving into dried fruit and a touch of citrus zest, while oak lends a pleasant dryness that balances the sweetness.

    Finish

Elegant and dry, long and warming, with sweetness gradually fading and notes of dark chocolate, coffee and a hint of tobacco.

El Dorado 15 Year is a Demerara Rum from Guyana, matured for at least 15 years in oak casks and bottled at 43%.

The 15 Year expression builds on the house's classic Demerara style, but with the extra depth and complexity that three additional years of cask ageing bring. The rum is distilled at Demerara Distillers' Diamond plant, where the blending of several historic still styles results in a rum with an unusually broad flavour palette for its price range.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

The world's last surviving wooden double pot still of its kind still distils rum as though it were still the 1800s.

    Expert description

El Dorado Port Morant 1999 is a Single Still Demerara Rum from Guyana, distilled on the Diamond distillery's famous Port Mourant wooden double pot still in 1999, matured for 16 years in former bourbon casks and bottled at 61.4% with no added sweetening.

The Port Mourant still is the world's last surviving wooden double pot still of its type and produces a markedly heavier, smokier, more earthy rum than most other Demerara still styles. Being part of El Dorado's Rare Collection, the release is neither filtered nor sweetened, letting the still's raw, historic character come through undisturbed.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Smoky and earthy with intense spiced tones, a greedy fruitiness evoking cooked apple, vanilla and cinnamon, extended by liquorice, almond and walnuts, highlighted with candied orange, tar, aniseed, black pepper, cloves and nutmeg.

    Palate

Woody notes explode on the tongue, transitioning into spiced aniseed and tar followed by a buttery, oily, nutty caramel, surprisingly citrus-forward with sweetness and dryness on the first sip.

    Finish

Vibrant woody aromas, sweet spices and dried fruit blend harmoniously into a refined, delicate finish with a hint of citrus.

    Expert description

El Dorado Versailles 2002 is a Single Still Demerara Rum from Guyana, distilled on the historic Versailles pot still in 2002 and bottled at 63% as part of El Dorado's Rare Collection.

The Versailles still is one of the last surviving single-distillation stills of its type in the world and produces a markedly heavier, more robust rum style than the blended releases in El Dorado's core range. Because the release is unfiltered and has no added sugar, it comes across as raw and intense, its 63% strength underlining the still's characteristic power.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Light brown sugar with a touch of sourness, complemented by caramel, tobacco, tropical fruit and cinnamon.

    Palate

Powerful with charred oak and pronounced tannins, where plum notes dominate and leave a light bitterness along with a hint of pepper.

About El Dorado Rum

El Dorado is produced by Demerara Distillers in Guyana, where sugarcane has grown since the 1600s and where the rum is still distilled on a collection of historic wooden and metal stills, several rescued from now-closed plantation distilleries and kept running as living museum pieces. Tropical maturation at 30-34 degrees ages the rum far faster than in temperate climates, giving deep colour and intense flavour in relatively few years, which has made the 15-year expression in particular a repeat winner of "World's Best Rum" at the International Wine & Spirit Competition. Collectors chase the single-still releases from the individual historic stills, while newcomers find an easy entry point in the 12-year flagship.

History & Background

Demerara Distillers formed in 1983 through a merger of several plantation distilleries along the Demerara River, but the roots trace back to 1670, when the first sugar plantations were established by Dutch colonists. As most of the region's distilleries closed during the 20th century, the company gathered their unique stills under one roof, including the famous wooden "Enmore" column and the "Port Mourant" double pot still, both still running today. That makes El Dorado a rare chance to taste rum from several extinct distillation styles in a single bottle.

History & Background

The Demerara region has a rum-producing history spanning several centuries, rooted in the many small sugar plantations along the Demerara River. Through consolidation of these plantations, stills from several historic distilleries - including Enmore, Versailles, and Port Mourant - were gathered in one place, making El Dorado a living collection of rum history.

Production & Style

El Dorado distils using a unique collection of historic stills, including wooden pot stills and the famous Coffey still, each giving different rum styles their own distinct character.

Signature Style

Dark, Molasses-Driven, Complex
The flavour offers a deep, dark sweetness with notes of molasses, wood, and spice, shaped by the historic distillation methods.
