Only 3,000 bottles in the entire world from a single historic pot still – the kind of scarcity that makes rum collectors pay attention.

    Expert description

El Dorado Versailles 2002 is a Single Still Demerara Rum from Guyana, distilled on the historic Versailles pot still in 2002 and bottled at 63% as part of El Dorado's Rare Collection.

The Versailles still is one of the last surviving single-distillation stills of its type in the world and produces a markedly heavier, more robust rum style than the blended releases in El Dorado's core range. Because the release is unfiltered and has no added sugar, it comes across as raw and intense, its 63% strength underlining the still's characteristic power.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Light brown sugar with a touch of sourness, complemented by caramel, tobacco, tropical fruit and cinnamon.

    Palate

Powerful with charred oak and pronounced tannins, where plum notes dominate and leave a light bitterness along with a hint of pepper.

    Finish

Dry and spiced with liquorice tones and a persistent, intense close.

Frequently asked questions about El Dorado Versailles 2002

What is a Single Still rum?

It is a rum distilled exclusively on one specific type of still, in this case the historic Versailles still, unlike blended releases that combine several still styles.

    Why is it so powerful?

It is bottled at 63% and is unfiltered with no added sugar, letting the Versailles still's naturally heavy character come through in full.

    How many bottles exist?

The release is limited to 3,000 bottles worldwide as part of El Dorado's Rare Collection.

    Is it worth the money?

The limited run, the historic Versailles still and the unfiltered, powerful profile make it a genuinely rare experience for collectors and enthusiasts rather than an everyday rum.

    How should it be served?

Best in a snifter glass, ideally with a few drops of water added to open up the tannic, spiced notes.

Is it suited to experienced rum tasters?

Yes, its intense strength and robust tannins make it most interesting for enthusiasts already familiar with the characteristic styles of the Demerara stills.
