Cognac de Pradière

In Charente, where chalky soil gives the grapes a distinctive minerality, Cognac de Pradière is distilled using the same methods the house's forebears used generations ago. The cognac rests year after year in French oak casks, slowly shifting from clear to amber as its character deepens. It's time, not speed, that drives the process.

In Petite Champagne, where the chalky soil gives Ugni Blanc grapes their fine acidity, the Cognac house Lhéraud bottles a small series under the name De Pradiere. Cognac VS de Pradiere is the youngest of them, a bright introduction to the terroir's character.

    Expert's Description

Cognac VS de Pradiere is a French Cognac from Petite Champagne, aged in oak casks for a minimum of 3 years and bottled at 40%.

The De Pradiere range comes from the Cognac house Lhéraud, which has distilled in the region since the early 1800s, though for many years it mostly sold its cognac on to other houses rather than bottling under its own name.

The VS quality is the house's youngest expression, made exclusively from Ugni Blanc grapes grown in Petite Champagne, and it still carries a touch of the freshness that defines a young cognac, while the oak ageing has rounded out its edges.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose offers raisin and dried apricot with a light touch of oak in the background.

    Palate

The palate is dry and crisp, as expected from a VS cognac, with citrus fruit and a hint of orange peel that slowly unfolds.

    Finish

The finish lands softly with vanilla and a touch of spice that lingers for a while.

About Cognac de Pradière

Cognac de Pradière is a French cognac from the Charente region, produced using classic methods with long oak-cask ageing. For the newcomer it's an accessible introduction to the cognac category, with a round, softly caramelised profile; for the connoisseur, the interest lies in the fact that smaller, family-run cognac houses like Pradière offer a different, more terroir-driven experience than the large, well-known trading houses that dominate the international market.

History & Background

Cognac de Pradière is produced in the Charente region using the traditional methods that define the appellation: double distillation in copper pot stills followed by long ageing in French oak casks. Family-run houses like Pradière have historically stood in the shadow of the big cognac names, but represent an important part of the region's output, where many smaller vineyards and distillers supply both their own bottlings and the major trading houses. The cognac's character is shaped by the chalky soil of Charente, believed to give the grapes a particular finesse.

Production & Style

The grapes are grown locally in Cognac-regionen, and distillation follows the cognac appellation's rules in traditional copper pot stills. Maturation takes place on French oak casks.
