Christianelund Wine

Trine and Anders Gold took over Christianelund in 2003 with plans for keeping horses, but as their family of six children grew, vines took root instead. Today the family grows Solaris and Souvignier Gris, grape varieties hardy enough to thrive in the Danish climate, proving that wine can grow north of the classic wine countries too.

Near Flemming, close to Vejle, lies Christianelund. The Gold family planted their first vines in 2014 - the original plan was horses, but the family grew to six children, and a vineyard came instead. Solaris Øst is named after the east-facing plot, where the grapes are woken by the morning sun.

    Expert's Description

Christianelund Gold 2021 Solaris Øst is a White Wine from Christianelund Vingård in Denmark made from the Solaris grape, bottled at 11.7% ABV.

Solaris is a hybrid grape developed in 1975 in Freiburg by researcher Norbert Becker - bred specifically for climates like Denmark's, which sit right on the edge of what grapevines can handle. At Christianelund, the Solaris plots are split into two sections, one facing west and one facing east, and this bottle comes from the east-facing plot, where the grapes get morning dew and the cooler early sun. That gives the wine a touch more tension in the acidity than its western sibling.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Gooseberry and citrus, with a touch of elderflower - slightly sharper in outline than you usually see from Solaris.

    Palate

Fresh and crisp, with fine tension and a touch of green apple.

    Finish

Clean and refreshing, with the acidity being the last thing to linger.

    Serving & Food Pairing

Serve chilled at 8-10°C in a white wine glass. The fresh acidity makes it a natural match for fish, shellfish and chicken - or enjoy it as a light aperitif.

About Christianelund Wine

Christianelund vineyard cultivates two grape varieties, Solaris with 2,000 vines and Souvignier Gris with 1,000 vines. Trine and Anders Gold took over the estate in 2003 intending to keep horses, but in 2014 planted their first 1,000 vines instead, adding another 2,000 in 2015 and 2017. For newcomers, Christianelund is a charming example of the new Danish wine movement, while wine-savvy drinkers will notice that the fresh acidity and lightness are a direct consequence of the Danish climate.

History & Background

Anders, originally trained as a farmer, handles the day-to-day field work alongside his job as a teacher, while Trine manages sales and outreach. The family's decision to grow wine rather than keep horses came once they realized the Danish climate could actually support healthy, cool-climate grape varieties like Solaris. Christianelund is today part of the growing Danish wine scene, where former farmland is gradually being turned into vineyards.

Production & Style

The wines are made from grape varieties hardy enough for the Danish climate, grown using methods adapted to the northern conditions.

Signature Style

Fresh, Crisp, Light
The flavor offers a fresh, crisp character, typical of wine grown in a cooler climate.
