About DOM Benedictine Likør

Benedictine is a French herbal liqueur, originally developed by Benedictine monks and today produced in Fécamp, Normandy. For newcomers, it's an aromatic, honeyed introduction to the world of monastic liqueurs; for connoisseurs, one of the most copied, yet never fully replicated, liqueur recipes, whose exact composition of 27 herbs is still known to only a handful of people.

History & background

According to legend, the recipe was first created in 1510 by a monk named Dom Bernardo Vincelli at the monastery in Fécamp. The recipe was reportedly lost during the French Revolution, when the monasteries were dissolved, but was rediscovered in the 19th century by wine merchant Alexandre Le Grand, who commercialized the liqueur in 1863 under the name D.O.M. Benedictine - the letters standing for the Latin Deo Optimo Maximo, 'to God, most good, most great'. Le Grand built a magnificent palace for production in Fécamp, which still houses the distillery and an accompanying museum today.
