Port Dundas Whisky

Port Dundas was two rival distilleries that in 1845 both invested in the new Coffey stills, becoming part of grain whisky's early history in Glasgow. Diageo closed it for good over a decade ago, and every bottle that still exists is now a small piece of Scottish industrial history.

About Port Dundas Whisky

Port Dundas was originally two separate distilleries in Glasgow, one founded in 1811 by Daniel McFarlane and the other by Brown, Gourlie & Co., both of which installed the pioneering Coffey stills for grain whisky production in 1845. The distilleries were later merged and grew into one of Scotland's largest grain whisky sites, until owner Diageo decided to close it, making the remaining stocks increasingly rare. Collectors regard the independent Port Dundas releases from bottlers like Douglas Laing as a small but sought-after chapter in Lowland grain whisky history, while newcomers rarely encounter the name outside of specialised single grain bottles.

History & Background

The two original Port Dundas distilleries were founded respectively in 1811 by Daniel McFarlane and shortly after by the firm Brown, Gourlie & Co., and both were strategically located by the Forth and Clyde Canal in Glasgow, making transport of grain and finished goods easy. In 1845 both distilleries installed the new Coffey stills, a technological breakthrough that revolutionised grain whisky production and allowed for far more efficient distilling than traditional pot stills. The distilleries later became part of the Distillers Company Limited and subsequently Diageo, which ran the site for over a century before its final closure made Port Dundas another name on the list of Scotland's "lost distilleries".

History & background

The distillery was once one of Scotland's largest grain whisky production sites, before Diageo decided to close it.

Production & style

The whisky was distilled in column stills from grain and aged in oak casks using classic Scottish methods.

Signature style

Light, Sweet, Caramel
The flavor offers a light, sweet character with notes of caramel and vanilla.
