Old St. Croix

A Danish pharmacist on Saint Thomas created a rum in the 1870s that was later crowned America's fastest-selling - today the brand is called Old St. Croix.

  • Rum bottle with navy blue design, Old St. Croix Danish Navy Frogman
    Item no.: 222262-885

For every bottle sold, a contribution goes to the association of Danish frogman veterans – a toast that also supports those who once served underwater for Denmark.

    Expert Description

Old St. Croix Danish Navy Frogman Conventus Ranae is a rum-based Spirit Drink bottled at 60% to mark the 60th anniversary of the frogman corps.

The bottle is a tribute to Conventus Ranae, the association of Danish naval frogmen, who have historically fought against attacks at sea. Old St. Croix, formerly known as A.H. Riise, builds the blend on an intensive composition of strong Caribbean distillates, tying together the history of the Danish navy with rum's roots in the West Indies. Sales of the bottle have generated a significant contribution to the association's work strengthening the community among active and former frogmen.

Dragør sits quietly by the water, but the story behind this bottle began somewhere else entirely – on a lush island in the West Indies, where a young Danish pharmacist found his calling in molasses and heat. Albert Heinrich Riise had no way of knowing his name would travel the world for more than 150 years. XO Tribute Reserve gathers that whole story into one glass.

    Expert's Description

Old St. Croix XO Tribute Reserve is a Rum Based Spirit, finished in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks and bottled at 43.8%.

It carries an old name with new pride. Old St. Croix was the trademark Riise already used back in the 1870s, when he began selling his West Indian rum to the United States and Central America – named after the island of St. Croix, once known as the "Garden of the West Indies" for its lush sugar cane cultivation. In June 2025, the name officially returned after decades under the A.H. Riise banner, and Tribute Reserve is one of the first bottles to carry it again.

Tribute Reserve sits at the very top of the XO Reserve range. Here, the Master Blender works exclusively with casks from the oldest, best-preserved reserve stock – distillates sourced from Central America and the West Indies, finished in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks. The result is a deeper, more balsamic character than the rest of the XO range, with a slightly elevated strength that adds weight to the palate without ever turning sharp.

The bottle is a Limited Edition, with only 2,000 produced in total – each one individually numbered on the label.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

The nose opens with dark chocolate and bergamot, with a discreet hint of tobacco hiding underneath – almost like dusty wood in an old warehouse.

    Palate

On the palate it is surprisingly light and fruity, with a touch of peppermint playing against the same bergamot from the nose.

    Finish

The finish is dominated by peppermint and milk chocolate, while the tobacco returns once more – very discreet, more an afterthought than a statement.

    Did you know?

Look for the word "rum" on the label and you won't find it. EU spirits regulation only allows the term "Rum" for distillates that meet specific requirements for raw materials and maturation – and because Old St. Croix's blends fall outside those, the label reads "Superior Spirit Drink" instead. The taste is the same; the name is just more precise.

About Old St. Croix

Old St. Croix is a historic rum brand originally called A.H. Riise, named after founder Albert Heinrich Riise. In 2025 the brand was renamed Old St. Croix to better reflect its geographic and historical heritage.

History & Background

Albert Heinrich Riise was granted the privilege of running a pharmacy on the island of Saint Thomas in 1838. In the years that followed he took an interest in local plants, medicinal herbs, and the production of alcoholic products, with rum becoming a central focus. The brand was introduced in the early 1870s, when Riise marketed his rum in the US and Central America, named after the island of Saint Croix, which for two centuries was a centre of sugarcane cultivation. Following the sale of the Danish West Indies in 1917, the brand gained popularity in the US, and a 1934 advertisement called it America's fastest-selling rum, referencing a gold medal from the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago.

Production & Style

The rum is built on the historic recipe and tradition stemming from Riise's original production based on molasses from Saint Croix.
