Rhum JM Syrup

From 1845, when Jean-Marie Martin turned a sugar refinery into a distillery at the foot of the Mont Pelée volcano. Rhum J.M. doesn't just make rum - it makes the syrup that ties a good Ti' Punch together.

  • Bottle of Rhum JM Cane Sugar Syrup with chestnut-brown colour
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-1972756

Fresh cane juice straight from the fields, reduced down to a thick, chestnut-brown syrup with a scent of caramel — the classic sweetener for a Ti Punch, sourced directly from the rum distillery itself.

    The Expert's Description

Rhum JM Cane Sugar Syrup is a cane sugar syrup from the Rhum JM distillery, known for its rum from Martinique. The syrup is made from completely fresh cane juice from the distillery's own fields, reduced to a concentrated syrup with a chestnut-brown colour and a scent of caramel and grassy notes.

The flavour is thick and sweet, giving a phenomenal depth when the syrup is used in cocktails instead of classic sugar. It is made to accompany Rhum JM's own rum, but works as a sweetener for any rum-based drink where a clean, caramel-like sweetness is called for.

    Tasting Notes

    The Tasting Experience

The aroma offers caramel and a hint of freshly cut grass, while the flavour is concentrated and sweet with a deep, almost molasses-like character. The texture is thick and syrupy, so a small amount goes a long way in a glass.

    Serving & Pairing Suggestions

Use the syrup as a sweetener in a classic Ti Punch alongside rhum agricole and a slice of lime, or in a Mojito instead of regular sugar. Shake or stir the syrup well with the spirit and citrus so the sweetness distributes evenly through the drink.

About Rhum JM Syrup

Rhum J.M. is one of Martinique's most celebrated rhum agricole houses, often called "the world's best old rum" by press and connoisseurs. Beyond its acclaimed rhum agricole releases, the house also produces sugarcane syrup - a key ingredient in the classic Caribbean cocktail Ti' Punch, where syrup, rum and lime are blended to taste.

History & Background

The story begins in 1790, when Antoine Leroux-Préville purchased the Fonds Préville estate and gave it his name. In 1845, Jean-Marie Martin took over the property and turned the sugar refinery into a distillery, after which he began selling bottles of rum stamped with his initials J.M. In the early 20th century, the Crassous de Médeuil family, who already owned the Bellevue estate, acquired the property, creating a 400-hectare complex that brought new know-how and innovation to the brand.

Production & Style

The distillery is located in Macouba in northeast Martinique, at the foot of the Mont Pelée volcano. The freshly pressed sugarcane juice, called "vesou," is first turned into a kind of "wine," which is then distilled using two traditional Creole copper columns. The syrup is made from the same pure sugarcane juice, concentrated without any addition of distillate.

Signature Style

Sweet, Fresh, Sugarcane-like
The syrup's flavour is pure, concentrated sugarcane sweetness, without caramel or molasses notes - designed to highlight rhum agricole character in a cocktail rather than overpower it.
