Bumbu Rum

A Caribbean legend of sailors who mixed rum with spices and called it Bumbu. The rum is still distilled at the same authentic Barbados distillery, an island whose rum heritage stretches back 400 years. The colour is golden, the aroma exotic fruit and vanilla, and the story is as sweet as the taste.

  • Bumbu Cream Panama Rum Liqueur 70 cl 15%
    Item no.: 22227865421-2021-01-0018

Panama has had rum in its blood since 1890, when an old coastal distillery first started turning sugar cane into spirit.

Bumbu Cream is the more indulgent side of that story - rum meeting cream, spice and a serious dose of comfort.

The kind of bottle you reach for when the evening calls for something a little softer.

    Expert's Description

Bumbu Cream is a Panamanian Cream Liqueur made from Panama rum and cream, bottled at 15%.

It comes from Bumbu Rum Company, better known for its Original rum from Barbados - but the Cream expression is actually made somewhere else, at a distillery in Panama with roots going back to 1890.

Bumbu blends the rum with fresh cream, sugar and natural flavourings, and the name itself nods to the recipes sailors improvised on their voyages through the 1600s and 1700s - more a story of hospitality than a secret formula.

The liqueur isn't a limited release and sits permanently in the range, so there's no rush to track it down.

The sweetness is upfront and leans dessert-like - the cream carries the flavour, while the rum gives it a darker base underneath.

    Taste

On the nose, vanilla and burnt caramel lead, with a touch of coconut that reads more dessert than drink. On the palate it's creamy and full-bodied - sweetness arrives first, quickly followed by warm spices like cinnamon and a hint of toasted nuts. The rum sits underneath the whole thing like a dark, slightly scorched base, keeping the liqueur from turning cloying. The finish is long and soft, with caramel and one last touch of spice lingering well after the glass is empty.

    Expert description

Bumbu XO is a Rum from Barbados, matured up to 18 years in American bourbon casks and finished in Spanish sherry casks, bottled at 40%.

The rum is distilled through continuous column stills from locally grown sugar cane and matured in ex-bourbon casks for up to 18 years, after which it is finished in white Spanish oak casks from Andalusia that previously held sherry. The final sherry finish adds a layer of dried fruit sweetness and tannic complexity that lifts the XO edition considerably above the house's standard edition.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Toffee and toasted oak, followed by rich vanilla and a bright orange zest, with a hint of dried fruit from the sherry cask.

About Bumbu

Bumbu is a handcrafted Barbados rum, produced in small batches at a distillery that has existed since 1893. For the newcomer, Bumbu is an accessible, sweet entry point into rum with clear notes of banana, caramel and vanilla; for the connoisseur, the interest lies in the water used in production - filtered through Barbados's coral limestone, one of the purest water sources in the world - and in the brand's connection to the island's status as the very birthplace of rum.

History & Background

The name Bumbu comes from a Caribbean legend of trading sailors in the 16th and 17th centuries, who mixed local fruits and spices with their rum and called the result "bumbu". Barbados is considered the original "rum island", where rum was first distilled around 400 years ago, and it's on this historical foundation that Bumbu builds its identity today. The rum is still made at an authentic distillery on Barbados that has existed since 1893, following a recipe said to follow the same basic approach used by those old sailors.

Production & Style

The rums from Barbados and Panama are matured separately before blending and a light spicing with vanilla and tropical fruit, giving a pronounced sweetness.

Signature Style

Sweet, Vanilla, Tropical
Creamy vanilla, ripe banana and caramel dominate in an easy-drinking style well suited to cocktails like Daiquiri and Old Fashioned variations.
