Koch EL Mezcal

In the Mexican state of Oaxaca, where mezcal tradition lives closer to the earth than anywhere else, Koch El Mezcal roasts agave plants harvested using the same patient methods generations used before them. Every bottle carries the raw, earthy, often smoky character mezcal is known for. It's a spirit that never rushes anywhere.

There's a sweet smokiness to this Mezcal that calls to mind a late-night fireplace – with ripe fruit and a whisper of violets waiting behind it. This is what Oaxaca tastes like when the craft is given time.

    Expert Description

Koch EL Mezcal Maguey Espadín is a Mexican Blanco Mezcal from Oaxaca, double-distilled in clay pots and bottled at 47%. The distillery behind the bottle is Koch El Mezcal, founded by Carlos Moreno, who revived his family's mezcal tradition in 2009 and today works with more than 52 mezcalero families across 18 communities in Oaxaca. This particular expression is handmade in Jayacatlán from Espadín agave matured for 7-9 years before it is harvested, cooked and distilled twice in traditional clay pots – a method that gives the Mezcal its distinctive, rounded character.

While most Mezcal distilleries today use copper stills, Koch El Mezcal distils this Espadín in traditional clay pots – an age-old method that demands far more skill, but one many mezcaleros believe produces a softer, rounder spirit.

About Koch El Mezcal

Koch El Mezcal is a Mexican mezcal, made from agave plants using traditional, hands-on methods. For the newcomer, the raw, often lightly smoky flavour profile is an entirely different experience from tequila; for the connoisseur, the interest lies in the mezcal category's rising international popularity in recent years, driven by growing awareness that mezcal, unlike mass-produced tequila, is often made on a smaller scale using agaves that take many years to mature before they can be harvested.

History & Background

Mezcal as a category has roots stretching back several hundred years in Mexico's indigenous distilling culture, where agave plants were roasted in earthen pits and distilled in local palenques, small artisanal distilleries often run by the same family across generations. Koch El Mezcal is produced within this tradition, where the agaves, depending on the variety, can take between 7 and 25 years to mature before harvesting and processing. That long maturation time and labour-intensive craft are a central reason why mezcal is currently experiencing an international renaissance among bartenders and spirits enthusiasts.

Production & Style

The mezcal is distilled from agave, its hearts roasted in earthen pits before distillation, giving mezcal its distinctive smokiness.

Signature Style

Smoky, Earthy, Intense
The flavour is smoky and earthy, with intense depth from the pit-roasting process.
