Faer Isles Vodka

Faer Isles distills in the middle of the rugged Faroese archipelago, where sea, wind and Nordic tradition meet in every bottle. Their Subsea Vodka is aged beneath the ocean's surface, a technique that gives it its signature silky texture. This is spirit literally shaped by the North Atlantic.

Somewhere under the seabed between Streymoy and Sandoy, fresh water had been sitting in the dark for around a million years. Then the tunnel crews drilled through, and it started to seep. Now it is bottled, filtered by rock and lifted by a touch of distilled seaweed.

    Expert description

Faer Isles Subsea Vodka is a Faroese Vodka made with water from a reservoir below the seabed and bottled at 41.7%.

The water turned up while workers were drilling the subsea tunnel between Streymoy and Sandoy. They noticed a leak from a pocket of fresh water, and it kept running for months. Faer Isles Distillery saw an opportunity and set up its own tap inside the tunnel. According to the label, the water is around a million years old and has been filtered through layers of rock deep below the ocean.

The distillery sits in Vestmanna in the Faroe Islands, and the label calls it the most remote distillery location in the world. Besides vodka, Faer Isles Distillery makes whisky, gin and akvavit. The vodka includes distilled seaweed, which adds nutty and floral notes on top of the clean water. Minerals from the rock are part of the character.

The bottle is worth a look too. The design is based on artwork by the Faroese artist Eivor, depicting the wild North Atlantic Ocean, and the glass has a wavy, almost icy surface.

Elegant and gently spiced. Clean and calm, with no need to show off.

    Palate

Soft and silky. A clean note of wheat, mineral tones and a hint of sea salt. The seaweed sits in the background with something nutty and floral.

    Finish

Warmth builds slowly and leaves a lightly salty, mineral finish that sends you back for another sip.

The launch on 16 September 2022 was halted just minutes before it began. The Faroese food authority HFS ruled that the water had not come from a legally approved source and ordered the sale stopped. The ban was lifted in early October, and the first bottles reached the shelves.

The water in this bottle waited in the dark for thousands of years while the world above changed seasons over and over. Beneath the seabed by Hestur in the Faroe Islands, deep inside the rock where the Sandoy tunnel was blasted through, the construction crew hit a pocket of crystal clear fresh water, filtered through stone and shut away from sun and salt. Faer Isles Distillery in Vestmanna heard the story and decided to distil it.

    Expert description

North Atlantic Subsea Vodka is a Faroese Vodka from Faer Isles Distillery, distilled using water drawn 140 metres below the surface of the North Atlantic and bottled at 41.7%.

The water was found by accident when the contractor NCC drilled the Sandoy tunnel between two of the Faroese islands. A member of the project team had the idea of passing the water on to the distillery, and tests quickly showed it was a thing apart: mineral rich, clean and with a character clearly different from ordinary Faroese rainwater. After its journey through the rock layers the water has picked up minerals that now leave their mark on the taste.

To the finished vodka the distillery adds a small amount of distilled seaweed from the surrounding waters. That brings a nutty trace and a floral streak playing against the lightly saline base note from the water. It is a deliberate choice from a distillery unafraid to let the raw material speak.

Faer Isles Distillery was founded by whisky enthusiasts in Vestmanna and funded through crowdfunding with backers in more than 20 countries. Alongside the whisky still maturing in cask they make gin, akvavit and this vodka. Since launch Subsea Vodka has taken gold at the Vodka Masters in the Super Premium category and gold at the IWSC.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Quiet and cautious rather than sharp. A trace of spice sits beneath a clean mineral core, and a faint salty breath reminds you where the water comes from.

    Palate

Round and full without turning heavy. A light sweetness at the start gives way quickly to a pointed peppery warmth, and the seaweed reads as a discreet nutty layer under the minerality.

    Finish

Long and warm with a persistent spiciness that builds rather than fades. This is the kind of close you come back to.

About Faer Isles Vodka

Faer Isles Distillery makes raw, characterful spirits in the middle of the Faroese archipelago, and Subsea Vodka is the house's most iconic release. For newcomers it's a surprisingly smooth vodka thanks to underwater ageing; for connoisseurs, the ageing method itself - casks submerged beneath the sea - is a rarity that makes the bottle stand out in an otherwise uniform category.

History & Background

Faer Isles Distillery was founded by local whisky and gin enthusiasts and financed through crowdfunding with over 600 local shareholders. Commercial production began in 2021, based in Vestmanna.

Production & Style

The vodka is distilled with the same focus on local, North Atlantic ingredients as the rest of the distillery's range, giving it a character that sets it apart from typical, fully neutral grain vodkas.

Signature Style

Clean, Maritime, Nordic
The taste is clean with a subtle hint of the salty, maritime character that defines the entire Faer Isles range.
