Speyside's smallest distillery closed in 1983, when the whisky industry was at its lowest ebb. Ten years later, bottler Gordon & MacPhail insisted on saving it - giving a distillery with just two men on the floor the chance to prove that small and slow can still beat big. Today Benromach is proof that "the lost smoke of Speyside" was worth finding again.

About Benromach

Benromach is Speyside's smallest distillery, and it shows in every bottle - just two men handle the entire process here, from malt to cask. For newcomers it's an accessible, full-bodied, lightly smoky whisky that breaks with Speyside's typically light style; for connoisseurs it's the story of a distillery that nearly vanished for good, but which Gordon & MacPhail insisted on saving because they believed in old-school craft over modern efficiency.

History & Background

The distillery was founded in 1898, but the whisky industry's swings and a struggling market forced it to close in 1983. For ten years the buildings stood almost empty, until independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail bought the distillery in 1993 and spent the following years restoring it and recreating the old equipment piece by piece. Benromach officially reopened in 1998 with a clear goal: to distil whisky the way it was made in Speyside a century earlier, back when peat was still a natural part of the region's style.

Production & Style

The whisky is distilled in small batches using traditional methods with a deliberately peated character, unusual for Speyside, and matured in a mix of bourbon and sherry casks that give it its characteristic fullness.
