Glen Moray Whisky

Glen Moray was built in 1897 on the foundations of a former brewery just outside Elgin, and something of that brewer's practicality still lingers about the distillery today. For decades it lived quietly in the shadow of Speyside's more famous names, but under French owner La Martiniquaise it has grown into one of the region's most price-conscious quality choices. It's a whisky that proves value and character can easily go hand in hand.

  • Glen Moray Lady of the Glen bottle with pale straw-coloured whisky
    Item no.: 222255546-99963

One cask, no finish, no detour. Lady of the Glen is otherwise known for giving casks a final push in sherry or port, but here number 5586 was left alone for twelve years. 214 bottles, and that was that.

    The expert's description

Glen Moray 2008/2021 Lady of the Glen 12 Year Old is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky from a single 1st fill bourbon barrel, bottled at cask strength 57.1%.

The cask was filled in 2008 and emptied in 2021 — bourbon barrel number 5586, which gave 214 bottles, non-chill filtered and with no added colour. A 1st fill cask at twelve years is a tight combination: the wood still has plenty to give, and the age is just long enough for it to come together rather than stay raw.

Glen Moray in Elgin is one of the higher-output distilleries in Speyside, and a large share of the spirit ends up in blends. That is exactly why single cask bottlings from independent bottlers are one of the better ways to meet the spirit without colouring and filtration — you get what the cask made, not what a blender decided.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Vanilla and coconut first, classic 1st fill bourbon. Behind that sit green apple, pear and a trace of lemon peel, plus a warm note of freshly baked cake.

    Palate

Powerful and sweet without being cloying. Honey, vanilla and apple, with coconut and a touch of white pepper that the cask strength pushes forward. Cereal malt sits underneath and holds it in place.

    Finish

Long and warm. Vanilla and pear giving way slowly to a dry, spiced American oak close.

    Did you know?

Lady of the Glen does not stick to single malt alone. The range has also carried single grain from North British, which is rare among small bottlers — grain whisky is normally swallowed by blends and never appears under its own name.

  • Glen Moray Curiosity Rye Cask Finish bottle with pale amber whisky

Rye casks are not something you run into in Speyside. Bourbon yes, sherry yes, port maybe — but casks that have held American rye whiskey remain a rarity. Glen Moray brought some over from Kentucky and let spirit from 2016 finish in them.

    The expert's description

Glen Moray Elgin Curiosity Rye Cask Finish is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky finished in Kentucky rye whiskey casks and bottled at 46.3%.

The spirit dates from 2016 and had its final maturation in casks that previously held American rye whiskey. Rye behaves differently from corn: where bourbon casks lay vanilla and coconut into the whisky, rye casks bring pepper, cinnamon and a drier spice note. The outturn is 1,637 bottles, and the whisky is neither chill filtered nor coloured.

Curiosity is the range where Glen Moray tests limits rather than repeats itself. The distillery has run cask trials as a standing part of the work for years, and the Curiosity releases have included casks from Chenin Blanc wine and rhum agricole. The rye casks here belong to the more successful end of those experiments.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Soft vanilla met by fresh lemon peel and a clear peppery note. The rye registers immediately — there is something sharp and dry sitting on top of the soft Speyside base.

    Palate

Caramel and oak first, then forest fruit and a peppery middle. The rye character gives the whisky an edge it would not otherwise have had, and the citrus note keeps things fresh.

    Finish

Medium and spiced. Pepper and cinnamon drying out slowly, with a final hint of caramel.

The Curiosity range has not only been about rye. Glen Moray has also put out releases using Chenin Blanc wine casks and rhum agricole casks under the same name, and at one point the three were sold together as a tasting set so the cask types could be lined up side by side.

  • Glen Moray Wilson & Morgan bottle with reddish port-tinted whisky
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0143

Fifty-four months in port casks. That is four and a half years, and it is not a finish — it is a second maturation laid on top of the first. Wilson & Morgan chose 2nd fill port pipes precisely so as not to run over a Speyside spirit that is lighter than it looks.

    The expert's description

Glen Moray 2007/2022 Wilson & Morgan 15 Year Old is a Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky finished in port casks and bottled at cask strength 57.9%.

The whisky was distilled in 2007 and bottled in 2022 from casks number 5878, 5879 and 5880. Its final fifty-four months were spent in 2nd fill port pipes, and the bottling gave 586 bottles, non-chill filtered and with no added colour. The choice of used port casks is clearly deliberate: there is colour and dark fruit, but the wine never takes charge.

Wilson & Morgan is Italian. Fabio Rossi started the firm in 1992 and runs it from Treviso north of Venice, and the house has built its reputation on single casks and small batches chosen with an Italian eye for texture and finish rather than sheer power. Glen Moray carries a mineral, almost waxy mouthfeel, which the port casks here make more muscular without blurring.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dark and red cherries, with liqueur-filled chocolates. Creamy and dark rather than fruit-sweet, and underneath sits a dry, mineral note from the spirit.

    Palate

Maraschino cherries and Sachertorte, with dried plums and a spiced edge. The sweetness is there but not sugared, and the waxy mouthfeel of Glen Moray comes through clearly at 57.9%.

    Finish

Warm and building. The spice grows in strength while the cherry retreats into a dry, almost cocoa-like close.

    Did you know?

Wilson & Morgan has been bottling Scotch whisky since 1992 without ever having distilled a drop itself. The firm belongs to an Italian tradition in which importers had access for decades to casks that never reached the British market, and several legendary bottlings from the 1970s and 80s came exactly that way.

About Glen Moray

Glen Moray Distillery sits in Elgin at the heart of Speyside, on the banks of the River Lossie. The distillery is part of the Glenmorangie Company and thus the LVMH group, and is particularly known for its use of wine cask maturation - a signature style that lends the whiskies a fruity, soft character, while keeping the price accessible for both newcomers and enthusiasts.

History & Background

The distillery was founded in 1897 in a building that originally housed the West Brewery, dating from the 1830s. Glen Moray changed hands several times during the 20th century and joined the Glenmorangie Company in 2008, itself owned by the French luxury group LVMH. Over the years, the distillery has made a name for itself experimenting widely with cask finishes - from chardonnay to port and rye casks.

Production & Style

Glen Moray uses traditional pot stills and places great emphasis on finishing in various wine casks, including chardonnay, port and sherry casks. This consistent use of wine cask finishing has become the distillery's trademark, setting it apart from many other Speyside distilleries.

Signature Style

Fruity, Soft, Wine Cask-Driven
The flavour offers apple, pear and citrus, often with a touch of vanilla and a light sweetness from the wine cask maturation, giving a soft, approachable whole.
