Rooiberg Winery

Rooiberg isn't driven by a single winemaker, but by 34 independent grape growers who joined forces in 1964 around a shared vision. The cooperative farms over 11,000 hectares in South Africa, a large portion of which is deliberately left fallow to offset the cultivated land. It's sustainability written into the business model itself, long before the word became fashionable.

About Rooiberg Winery

Rooiberg Winery was founded in 1964 as a cooperative, that is, an association of independent grape growers without their own winemaking facilities. Rooiberg comprises 34 grape growers, all farming according to Sustainable Winegrowing and organic principles across a combined area of 11,069 hectares, of which 6,343 hectares are left fallow to offset the cultivated land. For newcomers, Rooiberg is an accessible, budget-friendly entry into South African wine, while the conscious consumer will notice the strong sustainability focus running through the entire operation.

History & Background

Rooiberg was founded in 1964 as a cooperative among 34 independent grape growers in the region, a model that gave the individual, smaller farms access to shared production facilities and marketing they could not otherwise have afforded. Over the decades the cooperative has consistently invested in sustainable viticulture, long before it became a marketing buzzword, and today runs one of South Africa's most ambitious land set-aside programs. That vision has translated into wider recognition of Rooiberg Winery's range, which includes both everyday and reserve-quality wines.

Production & Style

The wines are made from grapes grown in Robertson Valley's lime-rich soil, which gives the grapes marked ripeness and body.

Signature Style

Sun-Ripened, Full-Bodied, Accessible
The flavor varies by grape, but shares sun-ripened body and an easy, accessible style.
