Rooiberg comprises 34 grape growers, all farming according to Sustainable Winegrowing and organic principles across a combined area of 11,069 hectares, of which 6,343 hectares are left fallow to offset the cultivated land. Rooiberg was founded in 1964 as a cooperative among 34 independent grape growers in the region, a model that gave the individual, smaller farms access to shared production facilities and marketing they could not otherwise have afforded.
