Tobermory Whisky

Tobermory is the only distillery on the Isle of Mull, sitting right by the colourful harbour front of the little town of the same name, in one of whisky's most photographed settings. From here come two entirely different whiskies under one roof: the bright, fruity Tobermory and the dark, smoky Ledaig.

About Tobermory

Tobermory Distillery isn't just one distillery but two souls in one building. Under the Tobermory name comes an unpeated, fruity, and lightly maritime single malt, while the peated sister series Ledaig, named after the distillery's original name, delivers an entirely different, peat-intense experience. That duality makes Tobermory something of an anomaly in Scotch whisky: two distinct styles from the same distillery, the same water, and the same craftsmen, yet with wildly different personalities. For the collector, it means one distillery offers two angles of limited editions to chase; for the beginner, it's an easy way to discover the difference between peated and unpeated without switching distilleries.

History & Background

The distillery was founded in 1798 by John Sinclair under the name Ledaig, which explains why the peated series still carries that name today. The story hasn't been a straight line: the distillery closed in 1837, reopened in 1878, and was bought by John Hopkins and Company in 1890. In the 1930s the distillery fell silent again and was instead used as a power station, and in 1982 the buildings were even leased to a dairy company that stored cheese in them. Tobermory today belongs to Distell (now part of the Burn Stewart family of brands), and despite its turbulent past, the distillery is now one of the most visited on Mull.

Production & Style

Tobermory has a modest annual capacity of around one million litres and typically runs at only about three-quarters of it. The unpeated Tobermory style is matured primarily in bourbon and sherry casks and carries a hint of sea air from its coastal location, while the peated Ledaig series uses peated malt to create a striking contrast, two entirely different expressions of the same Scottish island climate.

Signature Style

Fruity, Maritime, Versatile
Tobermory offers a light, fruity sweetness with a hint of salty sea breeze, while the Ledaig series goes the opposite way with deep, smoky peat intensity.
