History & Background

Absinthe has roots in 18th-century Switzerland and became, in 19th-century France, a symbol of bohemian culture, before being banned across much of Europe in the early 20th century amid rumours of harmful effects. As the ban was gradually lifted, Hapsburg, upon its founding in 1999, deliberately chose a different path from the classic, historically faithful recreations, instead developing a more modern take on the spirit. That has since given the house a distinct identity in a category that otherwise often lives off its past.
