Ron Botran Rum

Ron Botran came to life in 1939, when five Botran brothers founded a distillery in Quetzaltenango in the Guatemalan highlands, over 2,300 metres above sea level. That altitude means slower maturation and a unique climate the family still credits as key to the rum's character. This is rum made closer to the clouds than most of its Caribbean rivals.

Five barrel types, a secret South American wine cask blended in, and rums as old as 30 years – the Botran family's celebration of 75 years in rum has not gone quietly.

    Expert description

Ron Botran & Co Gran Reserva 75 Aniversario is a Ron de Guatemala, blended from rums from the family's Private Reserva matured between 5 and 30 years, supplied as a 50 cl main bottle with two extra 5 cl sample bottles and bottled at 40-45%.

The release marks the Botran family's 75th anniversary and is composed via a solera-like system drawing on five different cask types: port, sherry, two types of bourbon cask, and a secret South American wine cask whose origin the house does not disclose. The combination of the broad age spread and the unusual cask types gives a complexity that stands markedly apart from the house's other releases.

Natural sweetness, no added sugar – just 15 years of patient maturation in Guatemala's highlands.

    Expert description

Ron Botran 15 Year Reserva is a Ron de Guatemala, matured for at least 15 years in Guatemala's highlands and bottled at 40%.

The Reserva expression sits between the house's younger standard releases and the more complex No. 18 Solera 1893, representing a robust, succulent and elegant style where sweetness comes naturally from maturation rather than added sugar. The honest, unadulterated approach to production reflects the Botran family's focus on authenticity over artificial sweetness.

    Item no.: 059763-615-9601

"Ki" means sun in the Mayan Quiché language - a name that captures the warmth and soul running through this Guatemalan rum.

    Expert description

Ron Botran Ki' is a Rum from Guatemala, matured in casks including ex-American whiskey and Moscatel casks, bottled at 40%.

Botran Ki' is made from top-quality sugar cane juice, so-called "virgin honey", and matured through a specially adapted solera system, where the rum is dynamically moved between casks of different ages to create a unique balance of young and older rum. Part of the maturation takes place in casks that previously held Moscatel wine, giving the rum its characteristic sweetness and softness.

Behind the rum is Ron Botran, one of Guatemala's most respected rum houses, which has been producing rum since the 1930s. With no added sugar, Botran Ki' retains its authentic character, making it versatile - just as well suited at room temperature as in a cocktail.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Sweet with notes of raisin and a light wine character from the Moscatel casks.

    Palate

Soft and full, with refined sweet tones and ripe fruit.

Guatemala's highlands, 2,300 metres above sea level, give a slower maturation than most Caribbean rums ever experience.

    Expert description

Ron Botran No. 18 Solera 1893 is a Ron de Guatemala, matured through a solera system in Guatemala's highlands and bottled at 40%.

The Botran family has distilled and matured rum in the Quetzaltenango highlands since 1939, and the name "1893" refers to the year the family's rum tradition originally began. The high altitude means lower temperatures than traditional Caribbean maturation environments, giving a slower, gentler maturation and an unusually smooth, round character for a rum with the solera 18 designation.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Elegant with vanilla, cocoa, spice and tobacco, complemented by mocha coffee, apple tart, caramel and rolling tobacco leaf with a light cinnamon note.

    Palate

Balanced, complex smoothness with orange peel and dried fruit, rich caramel and dark chocolate with a hint of mocha coffee, backed by toasted oak and discreet tobacco.

    Expert description

Ron Botran Rare Blend Guatemalan Oak is a Ron de Guatemala, blended from rums matured between 8 and 25 years and bottled at 40%.

Rare Blend is dynamically matured across five different cask types: American Whiskey oak, toasted American Whiskey oak, sherry casks, port casks and Guatemalan oak. This combination of cask types, together with the broad age spread, gives the rum an unusually layered complexity, where the Guatemalan oak in particular contributes a deep, distinctive wood note not found in the house's other releases.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Deep wood aroma characteristic of Guatemalan oak, with hints of vanilla, nuts, dried fruit and spice.

    Palate

  • Ron Botran Reserva Blanca Guatemala rum bottle
    Item no.: 22227865479-1106-197278488

Botran strips away all the colour from a rum that has genuinely aged for years, leaving a clear, easy-drinking result that surprises with its depth.

    Expert Description

Ron Botran Reserva Blanca is a Guatemala Rum from Industrias Licoreras de Guatemala, blended from rum aged 3 to 8 years and bottled at 40%.

The rum matures in American whiskey casks in the Guatemalan highlands around Quetzaltenango, where the distillery sits at up to 2,300 metres above sea level. The relatively cool location gives a slower maturation than in many other rum-producing countries. After ageing, the rum is charcoal filtered to remove the colour, giving Reserva Blanca its clear appearance while retaining much of the aromatic complexity from the cask ageing.

The result is an unusually complex white rum that offers more than the clear colour immediately suggests.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Vanilla and oak, with white grape and a hint of pineapple.

    Palate

Soft and explosive with fruity tones and an unusual complexity, along with a hint of grapefruit peel.

    Finish
