About Cloudy Bay Wine

Cloudy Bay is one of the earliest and most influential wineries in Marlborough, New Zealand, credited with putting the region's Sauvignon Blanc on the world map. The winery is now owned by the LVMH group and has become a benchmark for quality wine from New Zealand.

History & Background

Cloudy Bay was founded in 1985 by David Hohnen, founder of the Australian winery Cape Mentelle. After tasting his first Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc in 1983 and being captivated by its intensity, Hohnen together with winemaker Kevin Judd set out to bottle the essence of Marlborough. The winery is named after Cloudy Bay, the coastline Captain James Cook named during his voyage to New Zealand in 1770. In 2003, the winery was acquired by champagne house Veuve Clicquot and is now part of the LVMH group. In 2014, the winery expanded into Central Otago with the acquisition of the Northburn Station vineyards.

Production & Style

Cloudy Bay is best known for its Sauvignon Blanc, but also produces Chardonnay and other varietals from both Marlborough and Central Otago, focused on capturing the region's characteristic intensity and freshness.

Signature Style

Intense, Fresh, Fruity
The taste offers pronounced passionfruit, citrus and green notes, carried by a lively acidity that has itself become the hallmark of New Zealand's Sauvignon Blanc style.
