The taste has remained the same since 1897: plenty of liquorice and secret spices, including star anise and bitter orange, mixed with quality schnapps. Original Dr. Nielsen's Bitter was inducted into the Hall of Fame in SuperAvisen's consumer test. For the newcomer it's an approachable, sweetly spiced bitter, far less sharp than many other bitter liqueurs; for the collector and nostalgic consumer, the over 125-year-old recipe and largely unchanged label are part of the charm, a bottle that has survived while many competitors have vanished.

Dr. Nielsen Bitter belongs to the Danish tradition of named 'doctor's bitters' - a type of snaps and bitters historically marketed with reference to a (often invented or local) doctor to emphasize the drink's digestive properties. The tradition dates back to 19th-century Denmark, when bitters were sold as a kind of household medicine as much as an enjoyment.
