Killowen Distillery

In the Mourne Mountains of Northern Ireland, Brendan Carty, Liam Brogan and Shane McCarthy founded Killowen in 2017 with a clear goal: to revive old Irish distillation methods. They use traditional pot stills heated by open flame and worm tub condensers, a technique that gives deeper, more complex flavour. Their acclaimed Poitín, launched in the US in 2022, paved the way while the world waits for the distillery's first own whiskey.

Killowen Distillery is a small Irish distillery in the Mourne Mountains, founded in 2017 by Brendan Carty, Liam Brogan and Shane McCarthy. For newcomers, the house's Poitín is an accessible introduction to old Irish spirits tradition; for collectors, the traditional production methods - open flame and worm tub - are a rarity that sets Killowen apart from most modern distilleries.

History & Background

Killowen Distillery was founded in 2017 by Brendan Carty, Liam Brogan and Shane McCarthy, who shared a vision of combining old Irish distillation methods with modern innovation. The distillery is idyllically located in the Mourne Mountains of Northern Ireland and has from the start insisted on an uncompromising approach to craft, including the use of traditional pot stills with open flames and worm tub condensers. While the distillery is still waiting to release its first own-produced whiskey, it has already made a mark internationally with its acclaimed Poitín, launched in the US in 2022. Killowen also works with Irish bonding, an old method of selecting and maturing casks from other distilleries.
