Rogue Farms Rum

Rogue grows what they distil. In Oregon's fertile soil, hops, grain and fruit grow that end up straight in the still, with no middlemen and no compromise. Rogue Farms Rum is proof that farm-to-glass isn't just a slogan, but an entire philosophy.

Fog rolls in over Yaquina Bay, and the smell of salt water hangs in the air around the old shipyard buildings on the waterfront in Newport. Here, where Oregon's coast meets the Pacific, the casks stand and breathe with the tide. And a few miles inland the hazelnuts ripen in the Willamette Valley.

    Expert description

Rogue Hazelnut Spice Oregon Rum USA is an American Spiced Rum aged in Rogue Dead Guy Whiskey casks and bottled at 40%.

The rum comes from Rogue Spirits in Newport, Oregon, which opened the state's first rum distillery. Rogue is best known as a brewery, and it shows in the way they work. The distillate is made in 567-litre "grundies" from Hawaiian cane sugar, champagne yeast and coastal water. Each batch is double distilled, and the distillate is then filtered through charcoal by hand.

Then the rum goes into cask. Rogue uses its own spent Dead Guy Whiskey casks, which mature out by the bay, where salt air and shifting temperatures work on the wood. That is the ageing that gives the finish its bourbon-like, dry character.

The spicing is the other half of the story. Rogue adds roasted hazelnuts from Kirk Family Filberts, a family-run farm neighbouring Rogue Farms in the Wigrich Appellation, along with orange peel, Madagascar bourbon vanilla pod, cinnamon and cloves. The nuts are roasted before they go in, which is why the sweetness in the glass tastes of toasted nut rather than nut liqueur.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Toasted hazelnut straight away. Behind it lies brown sugar, a touch of orange peel and a warm scent of cinnamon.

    Palate

Medium-bodied and soft. Vanilla, cinnamon and cloves roll into one another, while the nut stays in the background throughout.

    Finish

Dries out towards oak and vanilla with a bourbon-like pull from the cask. Short to medium.

    Did You Know?

The name Dead Guy comes from a Día de los Muertos poster Rogue made for their Maierbock in the early 1990s. The skeleton became so popular that it ended up naming both a beer and later a whiskey - and thereby also the casks behind this rum.

Twelve years in tropical heat does something entirely different to a cask than twelve years in a Scottish warehouse.

    Expert description

Saint James 12 Year Agricole is an AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole, matured for at least 12 years in oak casks and bottled at 43%.

The long ageing in Martinique's tropical climate gives the rum a deep mahogany colour and a pronounced wood character, where notes of undergrowth and toasting gradually give way to softer cinnamon and prune notes. Because evaporation, the so-called "angels' share", happens far faster in the tropics than in temperate climates, a 12 year old Martinique rum achieves a cask influence that would take significantly longer in a colder climate.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Dominant woody tones with dried prunes, dried fruit and nutmeg, complemented by vanilla and toasted oak.

    Palate

Sweet vanilla and prunes followed by toasted almonds and walnuts, in a juicy, not-too-sweet parade of dried fruit, raisins, grapes, guava and ripe apples.

    Finish

Full-bodied with melted, complex tannins and a closing roasted note.

Because evaporation from the casks happens far faster in Martinique's tropical heat than in a colder climate, 12 years of ageing here corresponds to a far more intense cask influence than the same number of years would give in, say, Scotland.

Fifteen years in a cask can turn a rum into something close to a meditation object – this is Saint James' answer to exactly that.

    Expert description

Saint James 15 Year Agricole is an AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole, matured for at least 15 years in heavily toasted oak casks and bottled at 43%.

Fifteen years is the longest standard maturation in Saint James' age range, and the heavy toasting of the casks gives the rum a depth and complexity that puts it on par with the house's most ambitious releases. Where the 7 and 12 year expressions still carry a certain fruit-driven lightness, the 15 year is darker and more introspective in style.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Intense with woody and toasted tones, precious wood, spice, tobacco and cooked fruit, complemented by a hint of menthol.

    Palate

Elegant complexity with a mocha-tinged finish, where old cask dominates while fruit and menthol restore the balance.

    Finish

Very long and persistent with a high degree of refinement.

The 15 year expression is the oldest fixed release in Saint James' core range, and the heavy toasting of the casks is a deliberate technique meant to give the rum extra depth after so many years of ageing in the warm climate.

Some rums taste of sugarcane. This one tastes more of an old French wine cellar.

    Expert description

Saint James 7 Year Agricole is an AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole, matured for at least 7 years in oak casks and bottled at 43%.

The rum is distilled from fresh sugarcane juice at the Saint James distillery in Sainte-Marie and then aged for seven years, giving it an unusual Cognac-like character rather than the greener, grassier expression many younger agricole rums show. The cask ageing adds dried fruit and a light "rancio" note more commonly associated with old grape brandies than rum.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fruity with pineapple, melon and red apple, complemented by peaches in syrup, light anise, yoghurt, coffee grounds, honey and vanilla, with a hint of cinnamon.

    Palate

Vanilla, allspice, ginger and lemon alternate, backed by dried fruit notes and cane sugar reminiscent of Martinique's AOC style.

    Finish

Balanced and light, with a Cognac-like softness that lingers.

Several reviewers have described Saint James 7 Year as behaving more like a Cognac than a traditional Caribbean rum, precisely because of the pronounced dried fruit and rancio character from the cask ageing.

Straw yellow, light and carrying the freshness found only in rum pressed from pure cane juice – Saint James has made it this way since 1765.

    Expert description

Saint James Straw Pale Agricole is an AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole, briefly matured in oak casks and bottled at 40%.

Straw Pale ("Paille" in French) is named after the straw-yellow colour the rum takes on after around two months in oak casks – short enough to preserve the sugarcane's fresh, grassy character, but long enough to add a hint of vanilla and spice. The Saint James distillery in Sainte-Marie is one of the oldest rhum agricole producers on Martinique and has kept its original name unbroken since its founding.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Round, refined and delicate with well-developed notes of dried fruit, honey and liquorice, combined with vanilla and a light touch of wood.

    Palate

Well balanced with woody tones and a pleasant, lingering aroma, where apple and honey continue from the nose alongside a fresh, grassy agricole character.

    Finish

Light and short with a fresh, grassy impression.

About Rogue Farms Rum

Rogue Farms Rum comes from the American brewing and distilling house Rogue Ales & Spirits, founded in Oregon, known for its "farm-to-glass" philosophy where many ingredients are grown on the house's own farms. For the newcomer it's a chance to meet American rum from a house better known for its craft beer; for the curious spirits enthusiast, it's fascinating to see how a brewery's focus on local ingredients and experimental approach translates into a completely different spirit category.

History & Background

Rogue Ales was founded in 1988 in Ashland, Oregon, by Jack Joyce and a small team of enthusiasts who wanted to make craft beer outside the big industrial breweries. Over time Rogue expanded its production to include spirits, including rum, whisky and gin, all under the same farm-to-glass approach, where ingredients are grown, as far as possible, on the house's own farms in Independence, Oregon. Rogue Farms Rum is part of that expansion and represents the brewery's attempt to carry its craft philosophy over into the American spirits scene.

Production & Style

The rum is distilled from ingredients grown on Rogue's own farms in Oregon, an unusual approach for a rum producer outside the classic tropical regions.
