Some rums taste of sugarcane. This one tastes more of an old French wine cellar.

    Expert description

Saint James 7 Year Agricole is an AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole, matured for at least 7 years in oak casks and bottled at 43%.

The rum is distilled from fresh sugarcane juice at the Saint James distillery in Sainte-Marie and then aged for seven years, giving it an unusual Cognac-like character rather than the greener, grassier expression many younger agricole rums show. The cask ageing adds dried fruit and a light "rancio" note more commonly associated with old grape brandies than rum.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fruity with pineapple, melon and red apple, complemented by peaches in syrup, light anise, yoghurt, coffee grounds, honey and vanilla, with a hint of cinnamon.

    Palate

Vanilla, allspice, ginger and lemon alternate, backed by dried fruit notes and cane sugar reminiscent of Martinique's AOC style.

    Finish

Balanced and light, with a Cognac-like softness that lingers.

Frequently asked questions about Saint James 7 Year

What does Saint James 7 Year taste like?

Fruity with pineapple, melon and peaches in syrup on the nose, a palate dominated by vanilla, allspice and ginger, and a balanced, Cognac-like finish.

What sets it apart from younger agricole rums?

The 7 years in oak casks add dried fruit and a rancio character, giving the rum a more sophisticated, Cognac-like profile than the greener, grassier style often found in younger agricole rums.

    How should it be served?

Best in a snifter glass at room temperature, letting the dried fruit notes unfold.

Does it pair well with food?

Its Cognac-like tones make it a good digestif after dinner, perhaps with dark chocolate or a nut-based dessert.

Is 7 years old for an agricole rum?

It is a solid mid-age, giving clear cask influence, without being as old as the house's 12 and 15 year expressions.

Is it a good introduction to agricole rum?

Yes, its Cognac-like style makes it accessible to whisky and Cognac lovers wanting to get to know Martinique's Rhum Agricole.
