Some rums taste of sugarcane. This one tastes more of an old French wine cellar.
Expert description
Saint James 7 Year Agricole is an AOC Martinique Rhum Agricole, matured for at least 7 years in oak casks and bottled at 43%.
The rum is distilled from fresh sugarcane juice at the Saint James distillery in Sainte-Marie and then aged for seven years, giving it an unusual Cognac-like character rather than the greener, grassier expression many younger agricole rums show. The cask ageing adds dried fruit and a light "rancio" note more commonly associated with old grape brandies than rum.
Tasting notes
Nose
Fruity with pineapple, melon and red apple, complemented by peaches in syrup, light anise, yoghurt, coffee grounds, honey and vanilla, with a hint of cinnamon.
Palate
Vanilla, allspice, ginger and lemon alternate, backed by dried fruit notes and cane sugar reminiscent of Martinique's AOC style.
Finish
Balanced and light, with a Cognac-like softness that lingers.

Did you know?
Several reviewers have described Saint James 7 Year as behaving more like a Cognac than a traditional Caribbean rum, precisely because of the pronounced dried fruit and rancio character from the cask ageing.
