Domaine Begude

A French wine estate high in the Languedoc hills, where an English wine family grows grapes in a cooler, more alpine climate. Catherine and James Kinglake took over Domaine Begude in 2003 and now farm its 29 hectares fully organically. The estate was founded as far back as the late 1500s, but it's the modern, low-yield approach that has earned it its current reputation.

  • Bottle of Domaine Begude Chardonnay Arcturus white wine
    Item no.: 222276865480-67093-0316

Arcturus is the brightest star in the northern sky, and that's also the level of ambition Domaine Begude aims for with the estate's most oak-driven Chardonnay.

    Expert's Description

Domaine Begude Chardonnay Arcturus 2016 is a White Wine from Limoux, France made from 100% Chardonnay, bottled at 13.5% ABV.

Arcturus is the estate's most ambitious Chardonnay, aged for 12 months in 600-litre French demi-muid casks, giving it a more pronounced oak influence than the estate's other Chardonnay cuvées. With several more years now in bottle, the 2016 vintage has developed a fine complexity and a full, almost opulent character.

Distinct oak character upfront, followed by citrus aromas, spice and floral scent.

    Expert's Description

Domaine Begude Chardonnay Etoile 2022 is a White Wine from Limoux, France made from 100% Chardonnay, bottled at 13.5% ABV.

    Item no.: 222276865480-67093-0312

An English couple left the finance world in London in 2003 and bought an old estate at the foot of the Pyrenees - today Domaine Begude is one of Limoux's most talked-about organic wineries.

    Expert's Description

Domaine Begude Chardonnay Terroir 11300 2021 is a White Wine from Limoux, France made from 100% Chardonnay, bottled at 13% ABV.

The vineyards sit over 300 metres above sea level at the foot of the Pyrenees, where steep slopes and cool nights give the grapes a freshness that balances the fruit's richness. The soil is clay and limestone, and the estate is fully organic, run by James and Catherine Kinglake, who founded it in 2004.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

White peach, red apple and a hint of saline minerality.

    Did You Know?

Limoux sits so close to the Pyrenees that the area has a cooler climate than much of the otherwise warm Languedoc - it's exactly this elevation and cooling that give Domaine Begude's Chardonnay its characteristic freshness.

  • Bottle of Domaine Begude Pet-Nat La Folie sparkling wine
    Item no.: 222276865480-67093-0315

La Folie means "the madness" - a fitting name for a pet-nat, where the grape juice is left to keep fermenting straight in the bottle, with little control over exactly how the bubbles turn out.

    Expert's Description

Domaine Begude Pet-Nat La Folie de Begude 2021 is a Sparkling Wine from Limoux, France made from 100% Chenin Blanc, bottled at 11.5% ABV.

Pet-nat, short for pétillant naturel, is an old method where the wine is bottled while still fermenting, so the carbon dioxide is captured naturally without added sugar or yeast. This edition is made without added sulphur and may therefore appear slightly hazy, with the odd natural tartrate crystal at the bottom.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Fresh apple, pear and citrus with light floral and yeasty notes.

    Palate

Crisp acidity and a gentle mousse give a lively, playful and slightly rustic experience.

    Finish

Clean and refreshing with a hint of white peach.

    Serving & Food Pairing

Serve well chilled at 6-8°C in a white wine glass. Pairs as an aperitif or with light tapas and fresh shellfish.

Pet-nat is the oldest sparkling wine style in the world, older even than Champagne - the method was originally used long before anyone understood why the wine began bubbling again in the bottle.

About Domaine Begude

Domaine Begude is a French wine house in the high Languedoc, known for fresh, mineral wines grown at the region's cool altitude. For the newcomer, it's a good chance to taste Languedoc in a different, cooler style than the region's typically powerful reds. For the collector, the low yields - under 20 hl/ha for individual wines - are a guarantee of concentration and quality rarely found at this price.

History & Background

The estate is run by a British wine family who found a unique terroir in the Languedoc highlands, far from the region's warmer lowlands. Catherine and James Kinglake took over and relaunched the estate in 2003, though the property itself was founded as far back as the late 1500s, and is today run fully certified organic.

Production & Style

The wines are made from grapes grown at high altitude, where cool nights preserve acidity and give the wines a fresher, more elegant style than typical Languedoc.

Signature Style

Fresh, Mineral, Elegant
The flavor offers fresh acidity and a distinct mineral character, unusual for the region.
