About Niepoort Vin

While many of today's major port houses are owned by international groups, Niepoort has stuck to the independent, family-run model that allows for experiments other houses wouldn't dare. Under current owner Dirk Niepoort, the house has become known for combining classic Tawny and Vintage styles with a more experimental approach to Douro wines generally, making Niepoort a name followed closely by both traditional port lövers and curious wine enthusiasts.

History & Background

The story begins in 1842, when Dutch merchant Eduard Kebe founded a wine trading house in Porto. It was his successor, Francisco van der Niepoort, who truly shaped the company and gave it the name it carries today. The house survived the European phylloxera epidemic that devastated much of the continent's vineyards in the late 1800s, and has since been run by successive generations of the family down to Dirk Niepoort today.

Production & Style

Niepoort produces all the classic port styles - Ruby, Tawny, Colheita and Vintage - but is especially known for its aged Tawny ports, where long cask ageing brings complex notes of nut and caramel. The grapes grow on the Douro's steep terraced vineyards, and the house has increasingly focused on sustainable farming and lighter-touch viticulture.
