On the same slopes where Niepoort has sourced Port grapes for centuries, the old vines also grow that give this white wine its depth - a reminder that the Douro Valley's white grapes have long deserved more attention.

    Expert's Description

Niepoort Redoma Branco 2021 is a Portuguese white wine from the Douro Valley, bottled at 11%.

The grapes come from old vines on the right bank of the Douro River, planted at 500-600 metres on mica schist soils, and form a field blend of Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, Viosinho, Donzelinho and Gouveio. The wine is gently pressed, left to settle for 24 hours and then ferments spontaneously in French oak barrels of 228 and 500 litres, where it also ages for nine months on the fine lees.

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by the Dutch van der Niepoort family in Vila Nova de Gaia and for generations was known solely for Port. Under Dirk Niepoort's leadership, the house's Douro still wines, including the Redoma range, have since become just as central to its identity.

Redoma Branco is the sister wine to the house's Redoma Tinto and shares the same philosophy of old vines and minimal intervention, applied here to the white grape varieties the Douro Valley has to offer.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe apples, hazelnut and a faintly smoky minerality from the schist soil.

    Palate

Full-bodied and structured with citrus, stone fruit and a hint of vanilla from the oak ageing, carried by lively acidity.

    Finish

Long and elegant, with persistent minerality and a dry, nutty close.

    Did You Know?

Redoma Branco is often singled out by critics for proving that the Douro Valley's white grapes can stand up to oak ageing just as well as the region's famous reds - a point the house itself has argued since the wine's introduction.

Frequently Asked Questions about Niepoort Redoma Branco 2021

What does Niepoort Redoma Branco 2021 taste like?

Full-bodied and structured with ripe apples, hazelnut and citrus, finishing with a faintly mineral, nutty close.

Which grapes is the wine made from?

It is a field blend of Rabigato, Códega do Larinho, Viosinho, Donzelinho and Gouveio.

    Why is the wine oak-aged?

The French oak adds structure and a touch of vanilla without overpowering the white grapes' own mineral character.

What temperature should it be served at?

10-12°C is ideal, slightly warmer than a light white wine, so the oak nuances can show through.

What food pairs well with the wine?

White meat, shellfish and hard cheese all suit the wine's body and minerality well.

How does Redoma Branco differ from Redoma Tinto?

The two wines share philosophy and origin, but Redoma Branco is made from white grapes and has a paler, more mineral profile.

    Can the wine be cellared?

Yes, its oak-derived structure gives it potential to develop positively over several years in bottle.
