On a warm summer day by the Douro river, one drink keeps appearing on the café tables: a clear, dry white Port over ice with tonic and a slice of lemon. This bottle is the house's answer to exactly that drink.

    Expert's Description

Niepoort Dry White is a Portuguese dry White Port from the Douro Valley, bottled at 19.5%.

The wine is made from white grape varieties from the Douro and matured oxidatively in small, old oak casks, which gives it its characteristic nutty, spirit-driven style. Unlike sweet white Ports, less sugar is added during production, resulting in a markedly drier, more direct Port.

Niepoort was founded in 1842 by the Dutch van der Niepoort family in Vila Nova de Gaia. The dry style has long been a fixture of the house's range, precisely because it suits the light, refreshing drinking culture common in the Douro Valley in summer.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Golden-brown with a scent of nuts, almonds and ripe peaches, spiced with a hint of caramel.

    Palate

Concentrated and spirit-driven, with a dry nutty character and a hint of raisin, carried by a fresh, clean finish.

    Finish

Short to medium, dry and lightly warm, with a lingering nutty note.

Frequently Asked Questions about Niepoort Dry White

What is the difference between Dry White and a standard white Port?

Dry White has less sugar added during production, giving it a markedly drier, more direct and nutty style than the sweeter, classic white Port.

Can you make a Portonic with Niepoort Dry White?

Yes, it is precisely the classic base for a Portonic - mix with tonic water, plenty of ice and perhaps lemon or mint for a light summer drink.

What does Niepoort Dry White taste like?

It is dry and spirit-driven, with nuts, almonds and ripe peaches, along with a short to medium, lightly warm finish.

    Should it be served chilled?

Yes, best at 8-10°C, either on its own as an aperitif or mixed with tonic and ice.

How long does an opened bottle keep?

It can easily keep for several weeks in the fridge with the cork in, as the dry, oxidative style is relatively robust.

Does Niepoort Dry White pair well with food?

It works well with almonds, olives and salted snacks, and is also an interesting alternative to a dry sherry alongside soup.

What defines Niepoort as a Port house?

Niepoort is a family-owned house dating from 1842, known for a traditional approach to Port, including the less common but well-established dry white style.
