In the cellars of the Zwack family in Budapest stand casks that have aged herbal liqueur for more than 85 years. In one of them, Unicum Riserva takes on its first layer of character, before it gains a second from a completely different world, the Hungarian Tokaj wine region.

    Expert Description

Unicum Riserva Double Aged Herbal Liqueur is a Herbal Liqueur from Zwack, finished in Tokaji wine casks and bottled at 40%.

Unicum Riserva is the Zwack family’s super-premium take on the classic Unicum, and it stands apart through its double ageing process. The first stage takes place in the largest and oldest oak cask in Zwack’s cellar, a cask that over decades has developed a thick coating the family calls "black honey", lending the liqueur extra depth. From there, the herbal liqueur is moved into casks from Izabella Zwack’s Dobogó winery, previously used to age Tokaji wine. This gives Unicum Riserva a softer, more fruit-driven character, with a hint of dried apricot layered over the familiar bittersweet Unicum taste.

The Unicum name is said to date back to 1790, when the family’s court physician reportedly offered Emperor Joseph II his home-made herbal liqueur. The company itself was founded in 1840, and the round bottle with the red cross remains one of Hungary’s most recognisable spirits brands today.

    Finish

About Unicum

Unicum is the iconic Hungarian herbal bitter from the Zwack family, known for its deeply bitter, complex flavour created from a secret blend of more than 40 herbs and spices. The drink has become a symbol of Hungarian identity and history, surviving both war and communist nationalisation.

History & Background

The story dates back to 1790, when József Zwack, private physician to the Habsburg Emperor Joseph II, first produced the liqueur. When the Emperor tasted it, he reportedly exclaimed "Das ist ein Unikum!" - "that is a unique thing!" - giving the drink its name. Commercial production began in 1840, and by the late 1800s Unicum had become Hungary's national drink. The distillery was severely damaged during the Second World War and confiscated by the communist government, forcing the Zwack family to flee to America. After Hungary's transition to democracy, the family managed to buy the distillery back in the 1990s, and the company is run today by the 6th generation.

Production & Style

Unicum is made from a secret blend of more than 40 herbs and spices through a process of maceration and distillation. The two components are then blended and aged in oak casks for six months, giving the liqueur its characteristic depth and rounded bitterness.

Signature Style

Bitter, Herbal, Complex
The flavour offers intense herbal bitterness with notes of orange peel, cinnamon and root spice, finishing dry and long.
