Glen Deveron Whisky

On the banks of the River Deveron in the Highland town of Macduff sits a distillery whose whisky leads a double life. Under the name Glen Deveron, its gentle, malty single malt is sold in select markets, while elsewhere it appears under the distillery's own name. The whisky itself doesn't change, only the label does, and the reason why is classic Scotch trade logic.

  • Glen Deveron 12 years old Macduff Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky old bottling
    Item no.: 505956-807534-733

This bottle was filled while single malt was still something few people outside Scotland had heard of. The label, the cork and the 75 cl belong to another era, and that is the whole reason it is interesting now.

Please note: this is an old bottling from the 1970s in a 75 cl bottle.

    The expert description

Glen Deveron 12 Years Old is a Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky from MacDuff, bottled at 40% in a 75 cl bottle.

MacDuff stands near Banff on the north coast where the river Deveron meets the Moray Firth, and the distillery was built in 1962. Glen Deveron was for decades the name on the official house single malt, while the MacDuff name was left to the independent bottlers. The range has since been replaced by The Deveron, which makes any Glen Deveron bottle a closed chapter.

This one dates from the 1970s and holds 75 cl, the standard European format before 70 cl came in during the 1990s. The bottle size alone dates it, and for a collector that is part of the point.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Old fashioned and restrained. Wax, dried apple and malt, with a dusty note like the inside of an old cupboard.

    Palate

Soft and malty with pale caramel and nut, and the oily texture the spirit of that era so often had.

    Finish

Medium, dry and mineral with a final sweetness of honey.

    Investment potential

Medium. An official bottling from the 1970s under a brand name that no longer exists cannot by definition be recreated. Old bottles from this period also carry a different production reality behind them, and that is exactly what collectors of vintage bottlings are after.

    Did you know?

The 75 cl format was the European standard until the 1990s, when 70 cl became the common measure across the EU. Bottle size is therefore one of the quickest ways to date an old European whisky bottle, long before you start reading the label.

About Glen Deveron

Glen Deveron is the name under which whisky from the Macduff distillery is sold in certain export markets, named after the river that runs past the still house. The style is soft and lightly sweet with a clear malty character, making it approachable for beginners without sacrificing depth. For collectors, the interest lies in the company behind it: Macduff sits within the portfolio of John Dewar & Sons, owned by spirits giant Bacardi Limited, making Glen Deveron a somewhat overlooked gem within an otherwise well-known whisky empire.

History & Background

The Macduff distillery was founded in 1960 on the banks of the River Deveron in the Highland region, initially focused on supplying malt for blended whisky. Over the years ownership changed hands several times before it joined John Dewar & Sons' portfolio in 1998 as part of Bacardi Limited's acquisition. The company chose to market Macduff's single malt under the name Glen Deveron in certain markets, while elsewhere it is sold as Deveron or under the distillery's own name. The result is a distillery producing the same quality whisky under several identities, depending on which shelf it lands on.

Production & Style

The whisky is distilled and matured following classic methods, giving it a smooth, lightly sweet character.

Signature Style

Smooth, Sweet, Round
The whisky offers a smooth, sweet profile with a round finish.
