Austrian Empire Navy Rum

From the port city of Trieste on the Adriatic, the imperial navy of Austria-Hungary once sailed out into the world, with rum and colonial goods among the cargo brought home. Austrian Empire Navy Rum revives this nearly forgotten naval history, a chapter most people associate with Britain, but which also belonged to the Habsburg empire. This is rum as a piece of Central European history rarely told elsewhere.

    Item no.: 22227865378-408

The year 1863 marks the start of the Austro-Hungarian Empire's naval history, and this rum uses it as the starting point for a blend of selected Caribbean distillates.

    Expert Description

Austrian Empire Navy Reserva 1863 is a Rum-based Spirit Drink matured in oak casks, bottled at 40%.

The rum is a blend of selected Caribbean rums, carefully matured in oak casks to achieve depth and complexity. The name and the year 1863 reference the Austro-Hungarian Empire's naval history, and the bottle is designed with this maritime heritage as its theme. The dark mahogany colour and the intense, complex aroma reflect the careful cask maturation behind the blend.

Up to 18 years in oak casks through the Dominican solera method gives this expression from the Austrian Empire range a deeper, more complex character than its younger sibling.

    Expert Description

Austrian Empire Solera 18 Years Blended Navy is a Rum-based Spirit Drink matured in a solera system, bottled at 40%.

The rum is produced in the Dominican Republic and matured for up to 18 years in oak casks using the traditional solera method, where younger and older vintages are continuously blended through a system of stacked casks. The long maturation process gives the rum an amber-red colour and an aroma where spiced wood and matured distillates achieve perfect balance.

    Nose

Fruity with notes of oak, well balanced between wood and matured distillates.

    Palate

Fruit, spices, dark chocolate and caramel, with a bitter edge of dried fruit and lightly tangy herbal notes.

About Austrian Empire Navy Rum

Austrian Empire Navy Rum revives the story of the Austro-Hungarian empire's navy, which operated from Trieste on the Adriatic for more than a hundred years. The rum consists of Caribbean rum distillates shipped to Austria and further matured there before bottling at navy strength.

History & Background

Until the end of the First World War in 1918, Trieste was the empire's most important naval port, and it was from here that rum and other colonial goods were distributed into Central Europe. After the empire's collapse the tradition almost disappeared entirely, but in modern times the story has been retold through this series, which imports Caribbean rum and further matures it in Austria. The range spans several strengths and finishes, all referencing the navy's old rank system.

Production & Style

The rum is distilled in the Caribbean and shipped to Austria, where it is further matured and, in several editions, finished in special casks before bottling at a high, navy-typical strength.

Signature Style

Powerful, Spiced, Maritime
Dark caramel and dried fruit are lifted by a high alcoholic strength and a spiced, almost peppery finish matching the navy's rugged style.
