Kyrö Gin

Five friends sat in a sauna drinking American rye whiskey - and wondered why Finland had no rye-based spirits tradition of its own. That is how Kyrö Distillery and Napue Gin were born.

  • Bottle of Koskue Kyrö Dark Gin from Finland
    Item no.: 2222786536-5369

In the village of Koskue by the Kyrö river in Finland, Kyrö Distillery distils a gin on 100% Finnish rye, then lets it mature on American oak. The result gave the gin its original name, Koskue, now known as Kyrö Dark Gin.

    Expert's description

Koskue Kyrö Dark Gin is a Finnish gin distilled on 100% rye and oak-aged in American oak, bottled at 42.6%.

The gin comes from Kyrö Distillery, a Finnish rye distillery founded in 2012, which uses 100% Finnish rye for both its rye whisky and its gin. The base unites peppery rye with seventeen spices and botanicals, including meadowsweet, cranberry, birch and orange peel.

After distillation, the gin rests 3-12 months in new American white oak casks and is fine-tuned with freshly distilled orange peel and black pepper, giving it its dark colour and deep character.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Peppery rye meets a lightly sweet note of cranberry and a warm tone of oak.

    Palate

The palate is rich and spiced, with rye and pepper up front, supported by meadowsweet and a light sweetness from cranberry.

About Napue Kyro Gin

Napue - now known as Kyrö Napue Gin - is the Finnish rye gin from Kyrö Distillery, named after the Battle of Napue, fought in the village of Napue in Isokyrö in 1714. The gin has won international acclaim, including Best Gin in the Gin & Tonic category at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in 2015.

History & background

Kyrö Distillery Company was registered in 2012 by Miika Lipiäinen, Mikko Koskinen, Kalle Valkonen, Miko Heinilä and Jouni Ritola in the town of Isokyrö, Finland. The idea came about while the founders were sitting in a sauna drinking American rye whiskey, wondering why there was no Finnish rye-based distilling tradition. In 2014, the stills at the old dairy were fired up for the first time, and the first drinks were served at a pop-up bar in Helsinki.

Production & style

The gin is made from rye and 16 different herbs and botanicals, including cranberry, sea buckthorn, spruce needles and meadowsweet - a botanical mix that draws clearly on Finnish nature and forest tradition rather than classic Mediterranean herbs.

Signature style

Spiced, Forest-like, Fresh
The flavour offers juniper and a distinct, spiced rye character, layered with a fresh note of Nordic forest and berries, setting it apart from classic London-style gins.
