Tesseron Cognac

Cognac Tesseron is the house that made famously discerning critic Robert Parker make a rare exception. He gave Lot No. 29 a full 100 points, a score usually reserved for the world's greatest wines, cementing Tesseron's place as an unquestionably ultimate cognac house.

Some bottles need a story. This one needs a single name: Robert Parker, who gave Tesseron's legendary Lot 29 from 1929 a full 100 points and called it the most ethereal cognac he had ever tasted – and who later returned to the house's cellars to keep tasting.

    Expert's Description

Tesseron Lot No. 53 is an XO Perfection Cognac from Grande Champagne, bottled at 40%.

The Tesseron family, which founded its cognac house in 1905, is among the few families in the district still holding onto old vintage reserves that have never been diluted with water or manipulated in any way. Lot No. 53 is one of these reserves, and critics have described it as sitting close to the quality of the legendary Lot 29 – only in a darker, silkier expression with a complex aromatic profile that, according to Robert Parker, "can fill a room."

Wine Enthusiast has highlighted a nose of oak and nut paste with fruity notes of berries, dried fruit, plums, pears and soft cheese, while the palate is described as composed, succulent and honeyed, developing caramel, rancio and orange rind toward a deep, refined and mature finish.

As a Grande Champagne XO Perfection, Lot No. 53 represents the very top of the house's philosophy of releasing only "XO and beyond" – rare reserves available only in limited numbers.

    Investment Potential

Medium. Tesseron's named Lot reserves, including Lot 53, are limited and unblended vintage distillates that critics such as Robert Parker have compared to the house's most sought-after bottle, Lot 29. Sister releases from the same family reserve often trade for several times their original release price on the secondary market and at auction.

    Did You Know?

Robert Parker gave Tesseron's Lot 29 from 1929 a full 100 points – one of the rarest scores he has ever awarded a spirit, and a rating that has followed the entire Tesseron name ever since.

  • Bottle of Tesseron Lot No. 90 XO Ovation Cognac with golden colour
    Item no.: 22227865491-20023

Some cognac houses number their bottlings by year, and then there is Tesseron, which numbers by Lot – a reference to the individual reserves of old distillate the family keeps in the cellars at Domaine Tesseron.

    Expert's Description

Tesseron Lot No. 90 XO Ovation is a Cognac from Grande Champagne, bottled at 40%.

The Tesseron house, founded by Abel Tesseron in 1905, sold its distillate to other major cognac houses for decades before the family began bottling under its own name in 2003. Since then the principle has stayed the same: only XO and beyond, composed of eaux-de-vie from Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche and Colombard from Grande Champagne.

Lot No. 90 Ovation is a full-bodied XO with a handsome golden colour, where years of cask ageing have built a depth reaching well beyond the category's 10-year minimum.

The name Ovation hints at exactly the power and fullness this bottling is known for – a cognac not built to be discreet.

    Tasting Notes

    Palate

  • Bottle of Tesseron Tresor Grande Champagne Cognac with deep amber colour
    Item no.: 22227865491-1199

Cognac Tesseron follows one simple principle governing everything the house makes: only XO and beyond. Not as a marketing line, but because the family has for generations held onto some of the district's oldest, most valuable reserves.

    Expert's Description

Tesseron Tresor is a Cognac from Grande Champagne, bottled at 40%.

The house was founded by Abel Tesseron in 1905 with vineyards in both Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne, and from the ancestral Domaine Tesseron between the towns of Cognac and Angoulême the family sold its distillates to the large cognac houses for decades. It was not until 2003 that Tesseron began bottling under its own name – after building a reputation as one of the district's most respected suppliers of old, unblended distillate.

Tresor is composed of eaux-de-vie from Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche and Colombard, which have rested for more than three generations in Limousin oak casks in the family's cellars.

The Tesseron family also owns Château Pontet-Canet, a Grand Cru Classé estate in Pauillac from the famous 1855 classification, underlining how closely the house's identity is tied to both cognac and French wine culture at the very highest level.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe fruit and a distinct, well-established wood tone.

    Palate

Rich and full, with layers of dried fruit, spice and a silky structure.

About Tesseron Cognac

Cognac Tesseron is a family-owned house based in Grande Champagne, known for its system of numbered "Lots" rather than traditional designations like VSOP or XO, where each number denotes a specific blend and quality of older eaux-de-vie. The house achieved international fame when critic Robert Parker awarded Lot No. 29 the rare score of 100 points, a recognition that placed Tesseron among the most respected names in the entire cognac world. Collectors are drawn especially to the highest-numbered Lots, with the oldest and rarest eaux-de-vie, while newcomers can start with the house's more accessible expressions.

History & Background

The Tesseron family took over the house in the early 1900s and has since maintained a philosophy that the cognac's quality should stand on its own, without leaning on the classic designations the rest of the industry uses. Instead the family introduced its own "Lot" numbering system, where each number represents a unique composition of eaux-de-vie, selected by the house's cellar master. When Robert Parker awarded Lot No. 29 the rare top score of 100 points in his reviews, it cemented Tesseron's position as one of the few cognac houses whose reputation rests almost entirely on pure tasting quality rather than historical prestige alone.

History & Background

The house was founded in 1905 and has built up across generations one of the most impressive archives of old cognac in the region.

Production & Style

The cognac is distilled in the classic charentais copper still and aged for decades, often well beyond the category's minimum requirements.

Signature Style

Deep, Complex, Spiced
The flavor offers a deep, complex character with spice and dried fruit from long cask aging.
