Stauning Gin

Stauning Gin is the Jutland whisky maker's take on gin, distilled with the same craftsmanship and the same copper stills that made Stauning's whisky famous. Locally harvested pine shoots give it a distinct West Jutland fingerprint.
  • Bottle of Stauning Danish Dry Gin from the Jutland west coast
    Item no.: 222266-9655

Nine friends from Jutland founded Stauning Whisky in 2005 on the rugged west coast at Skjern - Denmark's oldest whisky distillery. Two decades later, the distillery has moved into gin for the first time.

    Expert's description

Stauning Danish Dry Gin is a Danish gin spiced with locally harvested pine shoots and bottled at 43%.

The gin comes from Stauning Whisky, which since 2005 has distilled whisky from local grain, floor-malted in-house and distilled in 24 small, direct-fired copper pot stills. With Danish Dry Gin, the distillery has for the first time moved beyond whisky and into gin, carrying the same craft traditions with it.

The juniper base is joined by pine shoots harvested in the nature around the distillery, giving the gin a distinctly Nordic, resinous character, while lemon peel and a touch of spice keep it balanced.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Fresh pine needle and juniper meet a lightly citrus aroma.

    Palate

The palate opens with piney juniper, before the pine shoots add a resinous, lightly spiced layer.

    Finish

The finish is dry and forest-like, with a last trace of lemon peel.

About Stauning Gin

Stauning built its name on whisky, but the gin shows that the distillery's philosophy, craft over shortcuts, works just as well in a clear spirit. The botanicals steep for 24 hours before only the heart of the distillate is used, a detail more typical of whisky-making than gin.

History & Background

Stauning Whisky was founded in 2005 by nine friends in the small West Jutland town of Stauning, and gin came later as a natural extension of the distillery's expertise in distilling over open fire in small copper stills. The distillery has since grown significantly and attracted international investors, but the gin production still holds to the same hands-on approach as from the start.

Production & Style

Juniper, coriander seed, angelica root, orris root, liquorice root and lemon peel are joined by locally harvested pine shoots, and the botanicals steep for 24 hours before distillation in small copper stills heated over open fire.

Signature Style

Nordic, Aromatic, Elegant
Fresh juniper meets a distinct pine character from the shoots, rounded off by spiced notes from coriander and angelica root in a clean, full-bodied gin.
