Stauning sits where the Skjern River runs into Ringkøbing Fjord, and the fjord opens further out towards the North Sea - a small fishing town on Denmark's west coast, long before anyone here ever thought about whisky. With the Navy Strength version of their gin, Stauning brings that maritime heritage back into the light, cranked all the way up to 57.3%.

    Expert's Description

Stauning Navy Strength Gin is a Danish Navy Strength Gin, distilled at Stauning in Western Jutland and bottled at 57.3%.

The recipe is identical to the award-winning Stauning Danish Dry Gin at 43% - the same juniper, coriander seed, angelica root, orris root, liquorice root and lemon peel, plus pine shoots harvested locally around the distillery. The botanicals steep in alcohol for 24 hours before the whole batch is distilled together in a single heart cut using the one-shot method: only the middle of the run - the heart - makes it into the bottle, while the heads and tails are discarded.

The difference comes down to how much water is added afterwards. At 57.3% there is simply less water and more of the actual distillate in the glass, and it shows: the gin turns more aromatic, the botanicals stand out more clearly, the finish lasts longer, and the texture feels fuller than the 43% version.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Juniper and citrus arrive first, followed by a mild spice and light herbal notes. Behind it sits a faint hint of pine from the West Jutland pine shoots.

    Palate

Clean and full-bodied, with juniper and citrus up front. The mild spice and herbal character follow close behind, and a light touch of pine carries the juniper all the way through.

    Finish

Soft, round and well balanced - surprisingly easy-going for something bottled at a full 57.3%.

    Did You Know?

Navy Strength refers to a strength of 57% or above. Before alcohol content could be measured precisely, sailors would soak gunpowder in the spirit and try to light it - if the gunpowder still caught, the spirit was "proof", above that threshold. The name Navy Strength is said to come from gunpowder staying usable even after an unlucky barrel leak in a ship's hold.

Frequently Asked Questions about Stauning Navy Strength Gin

What's the difference between Stauning Navy Strength Gin and Stauning Danish Dry Gin?

The recipe is the same, but Navy Strength is bottled at 57.3% instead of the standard 43%. With less water in the bottle, the gin becomes more aromatic and botanically concentrated, and both the finish and the texture get heavier.

Does Stauning Navy Strength Gin make a good gift?

Yes, especially for someone who already knows and likes gin and wants to try a stronger version. See the rest of our range of Gin.

Should you use more tonic with Stauning Navy Strength Gin?

You can. Because the flavour is more concentrated, you can adjust the ratio with a bit more tonic without losing the character, or stick to the classic ratio for a stronger Gin & Tonic. See our range of tonic water.

Which cocktails work best with Stauning Navy Strength Gin?

Classic gin cocktails where the gin itself needs to carry the drink: a Martini, a Negroni or a Gimlet. Because it is so concentrated, it takes up less room in the glass than standard gin without losing any flavour.

Can Stauning Navy Strength Gin be drunk neat?

You can certainly taste it neat in small amounts, but at 57.3% it is strong. Most people will prefer it in a drink, or with a few drops of water on the side if they want to properly assess the botanicals.

What is Stauning, and where does the distillery come from?

Stauning is a Danish distillery in Western Jutland, named after the small fishing town it is built in. The distillery is best known for its rye whisky and single malt whisky, and gin is a newer addition to the range, made using the same craft principles.
