Mombasa Club Gin

The name comes from the British gentlemen's clubs of colonial East Africa, where gin was the natural choice after a long day in the tropical heat. Mombasa Club Gin recreates that mood: classic, dry and impeccably British in style, with a touch of exotic spice. This is gin that tastes of a bygone era of travel and adventure.

  • Bottle of Mombasa Club Colonel's Reserve Gin from England
    Item no.: 2222786539-1018

In 1888, British colonists founded an exclusive club in the port town of Mombasa, in what was then British East Africa. The gin was distilled in London and shipped all the way to Kenya, so the club's members could taste a piece of home in a foreign land.

    Expert's description

Mombasa Club Colonel's Reserve is an English London Dry Gin distilled four times and bottled at 43.5%.

The Mombasa Club was known for its exclusivity and perfectionism, and the gin was originally reserved for the club's hand-picked members, enjoyed far from the London where it was made.

Botanicals are carefully hand-selected and include juniper, cassia bark, coriander, angelica root and cloves, a blend that still carries a hint of the exotic East Africa the gin was once shipped to.

The quadruple distillation ensures an extra clean, soft base that lets the botanicals unfold fully without sharp edges.

    Tasting notes

The nose is spiced and warm with clear juniper, cassia bark and a light clove-like depth.

    Palate

The finish is long and spiced, with a last trace of angelica.

About Mombasa Club

Mombasa Club Gin is an English gin drawing on the tradition of the British clubs of colonial East Africa, where gin and tonic was the preferred way to cool down. For the newcomer it offers an accessible, classic London Dry style with familiar botanicals; for the history-minded, the charm lies in the reference itself - the name and label tell a story of British colonial drinking culture, still echoed in many of the world's classic gin brands.

History & Background

The name Mombasa Club refers to the exclusive British gentlemen's clubs found in the Kenyan port city of Mombasa during the colonial era, where gin and tonic was a daily fixture among British officials and traders. The gin tradition in these clubs was closely tied to the spread of the British Empire across East Africa in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Mombasa Club Gin was created as a tribute to that era, offering a classic English gin profile that links today's gin glass to the colonial club life of the past.
