Highland Park Whisky

Highland Park is distilled at the world's northernmost whisky distillery, on Orkney, where raw sea winds and local heather peat give the whisky a character no one else can copy. Writer Michael Jackson once called it 'the greatest all-rounder in the world of malt whisky' - a verdict many still stand by.

  • Fascadale 14 year Highland Park Adelphi Batch 10 whisky bottle, natural colour
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0067

The label says Fascadale. It is not a distillery but Adelphi's way of speaking about Orkney without naming the place aloud. Heather peat, salt wind and fourteen quiet years in wood.

    The expert's description

Fascadale 14 year Highland Park Adelphi Batch 10 is a Single Highland Malt Scotch Whisky from Orkney, non-chill filtered and bottled with natural colour at 46%.

Fascadale is the name Adelphi gives the casks it may not label with the distillery name. The whisky comes from Highland Park, and the series has run under the Fascadale name across a long line of batches. Adelphi ranks among Scotland's most respected independent bottlers and picks its casks one at a time rather than buying in bulk.

Batch 10 is a closed release of 1,498 bottles. At 46% the spirit has the body to carry its smoke without the alcohol pushing the fruit aside, and since neither filter nor colouring has touched it, what sits in the glass is the shade the cask gave it.

Peat cut on Orkney comes from treeless, heather-covered moorland. That is why the smoke reads floral and earthy rather than tarry, and after fourteen years in wood it lies beneath the honey and apple instead of covering them.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Heather blossom and honey arrive first, then a dry, earthy smoke closer to smouldering heather than to tar. Behind it sit fresh apples, a hint of vanilla and a breath of sea water.

    Palate

Soft and almost oily in the mouth. Citrus peel and malt sweetness open the round, a warm current of pepper and cinnamon follows, and a lightly salted edge keeps the sweetness in check.

    Finish

Medium length. The smoke settles in like a faint peat ember while the honey sweetness ebbs away and leaves dried apple skin behind.

Scars tell stories. With Viking Scars, Highland Park gave its 10 year old a new look in 2017, carrying details inspired by Viking-age symbols and marks — a reminder that every bottle has its own story to tell.

    Expert Description

Highland Park 10 Year Old Viking Scars is a Single Orkney Malt Whisky matured in oak casks and bottled at 40%.

The name Viking Scars belongs to the design Highland Park introduced in 2017, giving the bottles a more rugged look with details inspired by Viking-age symbols and scars. The whisky itself is the distillery's entry-level 10 year old, built to be accessible without compromising on the characteristic Orkney style.

It offers an unusually soft and round palate with a light peated character, making it a solid introduction to Highland Park's world.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Light smoke with nuances of honey and heather, a light sweetness and a touch of sherry.

    Palate

Unusually soft and round, with a characteristic, lightly peated flavour.

  • Highland Park 12 Years Old bottle in 2024 redesigned packaging
    Item no.: 22227865388-321-2

A classic has had a fresh coat of paint. Highland Park 12 Years Old remains the distillery's most accessible dram, but in 2024 it got both a new design and a polished profile that still holds the same balance of sweetness and smoke that made it a fixture.

    Expert Description

Highland Park 12 Years Old (2024 Re-Design) is a Single Orkney Malt Whisky matured in sherry-seasoned oak casks and bottled at 40%.

The whisky is a masterful balancing act between sweetness and smoke, with vivid notes of Seville oranges and heather honey unfolding into layers of spiced fruitcake, before finishing with a gentle touch of Orcadian peat smoke. The 2024 redesign doesn't change the whisky's fundamental character, but marks an update to the bottle's visual look.

It makes for a versatile introduction to Highland Park's style — accessible enough for every day, yet complex enough to enjoy on its own.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Seville oranges and heather honey meet a lightly spiced fruitcake.

  • Highland Park 12 Year Old litre bottle with older Orkney Islands label
    Item no.: 505956-807534-821

There was a time when the litre bottle sat on every airport shelf, and when the Highland Park label still read Orkney Islands rather than Viking Honour. This bottle belongs to that era: a full litre of the distillery's everyday 12 year old, wearing the design that came before the overhaul.

    The expert's description

Highland Park 12 Year Old Version Orkney Islands Single Malt Scotch Whisky 100 cl is an Orkney Islands Single Malt Scotch Whisky made from barley partly dried over heather peat cut at Hobbister Moor, bottled at 40% in the litre format.

This is the older presentation of the distillery's 12 year old. The 100 cl size was for many years the standard in duty free shops and on board the ferries, where travellers could buy larger bottles than the domestic trade offered. It has become rare, which is exactly why these litre bottles tend to be set aside rather than opened.

The label is a date stamp in itself. It reads Orkney Islands Single Malt Scotch Whisky, wording Highland Park used until the distillery reworked the whole range in 2017 along Norse lines and renamed the 12 year old Viking Honour. Typeface, colours and bottle shape changed at the same time, and the old label became history.

The whisky itself is the distillery's cornerstone. Highland Park has been distilling at Kirkwall since 1798 and is known for keeping its peat restrained, so the smoke runs beneath the malt and honey instead of taking charge. At 40% the result is soft and easy to approach without losing character.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Heather honey and pale caramel first, then a dry, almost floral smoke closer to warm heather than to a bonfire. A twist of orange peel sits behind it.

    Palate

Soft and malty, with toffee, stewed apple and a touch of cinnamon. The smoke arrives late and gently, like a thin layer of ash laid over the sweetness.

    Finish

Medium. Malt and honey ebb away slowly, leaving peat and a small breath of salt at the very end.

    Did you know?

Highland Park is one of very few Scottish distilleries still running its own floor maltings. Roughly a fifth of the barley is turned by hand on the floors at Kirkwall and dried over peat, while the rest arrives unpeated from the mainland. That blend is what keeps the smoke measured.

  • Highland Park Viking Heart whisky in ceramic bottle
    Item no.: 222278555-999687

A jar, not a bottle. Highland Park drew on the Vikings' own clay vessels and cast a 15-year-old whisky into ceramic — hard on the outside, warm within, just like the islands it comes from.

    Expert Description

Highland Park 15 Year Old Viking Heart is a Single Orkney Malt Whisky matured in sherry-seasoned oak casks and bottled at 44%.

The Viking Heart series is Highland Park's tribute to Orkney's Norse heritage, and this 15-year-old expression is bottled in ceramic rather than glass — a nod to the clay vessels the Vikings themselves used for storage. The whisky is composed by master blender Gordon Motion from a combination of first-fill European and American sherry-seasoned oak casks alongside older refill casks.

The result builds on Highland Park's classic 15-year-old character, with an extra layer of sherry richness from the selected casks.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Heather blossom and a light veil of smoke meet dried apricot and a hint of honey, with sherried nuts sitting quietly in the background.

    Palate

Soft and rounded, with caramel, toasted almonds and a warm, spiced peat that never takes over.

Before new designs and new cask combinations, there was this 15-year-old expression of Highland Park, as it looked when it was first introduced as an exclusive release back in 2003. A taste of how the distillery's style once was, before it evolved further.

    Expert Description

Highland Park 15 Year Old Old Version is a Single Orkney Malt Whisky matured in oak casks and bottled at 40%.

This is the original 15-year-old, as it was introduced in 2003 as an exclusive release, before later becoming a permanent part of the distillery's international range. The whisky builds on the 12-year-old style, but with an extra layer of complexity from the longer maturation — more floral, more aromatic, with a milder smoke.

Today this exact edition is discontinued and replaced by newer versions, making it an interesting glimpse into how Highland Park tasted for an earlier generation.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Aromatic smokiness with a hint of camphor, backed by fresh citrus notes and a light floral scent.

  • Highland Park Between You and I bottle from the Björn Frantzén collaboration
    Item no.: 222665-8558

Some whiskies are made to be drunk. This one was made to be argued over. Highland Park handed cask selection to a Swedish three-star chef, then sent the bottle out with no official tasting notes at all. What comes in the box instead is a set of 16 cards and one question: what do you taste?

    The expert's description

Highland Park 16 Year Old Between You and I By Björn Frantzén Single Orkney Malt Scotch Whisky 48% is a Single Orkney Malt Scotch Whisky matured in virgin Swedish oak, ex-bourbon casks and sherry-seasoned oak casks, bottled at 48%.

Björn Frantzén is the Swedish chef behind Frantzén in Stockholm, the first restaurant in Sweden to hold three Michelin stars. His cooking pulls Nordic produce through Japanese precision and French technique, and that way of thinking about flavour is exactly what Highland Park wanted inside the warehouse when the casks were chosen.

Virgin Swedish oak carries the whisky. It is the first time the distillery has matured spirit in that wood, and it brings a dry, nutty spice found nowhere else in the range. Around it sit ex-bourbon casks for sweetness and warmth, and sherry-seasoned oak casks pulling vanilla and dried fruit into the blend. Underneath everything lies Highland Park's own heather peat, dialled well down.

Every bottle ships with those 16 cards. They do not tell you what should be in the glass; they ask questions and leave the wording to you. The whisky is non-chill filtered and bottled at natural colour, so nothing of the character is planed off on the way out of the warehouse.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Vanilla and pale orchard fruit lead, then a dry nuttiness from the Swedish oak — somewhere between hazelnut and freshly planed timber. The peat sits far down and reads as dried heather rather than bonfire.

    Palate

A soft opening of honey, apricot and candied lemon peel. Then the oak tightens with nutmeg and a flick of black tea, and only at the very end does the smoke slide in from the side.

    Finish

Medium length and on the dry side. The spice hangs on, the malt returns, and a trace of salt closes it out alongside the last of the smoke.

High. This is the first Highland Park matured in virgin Swedish oak, the release is limited in time, and a collaboration between an old Scottish distillery and a three-star chef rarely gets a second run. A cask type that exists nowhere else in the range makes the bottle hard to replace once the shelves clear.

    Did you know?

Highland Park sent Björn Frantzén the very first bottle without telling him what to look for. His own associations ran from a tropical palm beach to childhood baking in Sweden, and those responses became the starting point for the packaging design.

  • Highland Park 18 Year Old Dràm Mòr bottle from single hogshead
    Item no.: 505956-597250-277

One cask. Not a selection, not a marriage of many, but a single hogshead filled in 2006 and emptied again eighteen years later. Kenny and Viktorija Macdonald bottled it exactly as it stood: no filtration, no colouring, no water. What is in the bottle is what was in the wood.

    The expert's description

Highland Park 18 Year Old Dràm Mòr Single Malt Scotch Whisky 57.1% is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky drawn from one hogshead and bottled without chill filtration at cask strength of 57.1%.

Dràm Mòr is a small Scottish bottling house in Dumbarton, started in 2019 by husband and wife Kenny and Viktorija Macdonald. They began as an export agency for Scotch before buying casks of their own, and the company now ships its bottlings to 14 countries. Every cask is tasted and picked individually, and everything goes out at full strength with natural colour.

The spirit went into wood in 2006 and was bottled in 2024 after 18 years in hogshead no. 3535. A hogshead holds roughly 250 litres and is built from the staves of American bourbon barrels, rebuilt with an extra stave and fresh ends. It is larger than the barrel it came from, so the ratio of liquid to wood is lower. Maturation runs slower, and the distillery character stays in place instead of being overrun by oak. The cask gave 292 bottles.

Cask strength here means no water was added after maturation. The 57.1% carries the oils and heavy aroma compounds that dilution would otherwise push into the background, and without chill filtration the texture stays thick and faintly waxy. In return the whisky wants a few minutes in the glass before it opens up.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Salt seaweed and dry straw meet honey and dried heather. Behind them sits a thin veil of smoke, closer to cool ash than open fire, and a twist of lemon peel.

    Palate

Powerful and oily. Citrus and lemon sorbet cut through first, then roasted pears and a clear note of white pepper. The smoke settles lightly on top and keeps the sweetness in check.

    Finish

Long and warm. The pepper hangs on, and at the end Highland Park's peat unfolds and rounds everything off with a dry, earthy tone.

  • Highland Park 25 Year Old bottle in older classic design
    Item no.: 505956-498796-350

This bottle sat on the shelf long before Highland Park drew its current look. The label is the old one, the glass has the old shape, and inside sits a malt that went into wood a quarter of a century earlier. The wind off the North Atlantic had plenty of time to do its work.

    The expert's description

Highland Park 25 Year Old Single Orkney Malt Scotch Whisky 48.1% is a Single Orkney Malt Scotch Whisky matured for 25 years in oak casks and bottled without chill filtration at 48.1%.

This release carries the older bottle design used before the distillery's most recent redesign of the range. Label, bottle shape and typeface belong to a generation many collectors recognise from their own cabinet, and that design is no longer produced. Highland Park's 25 Year Old has also been bottled at several strengths over the years, and this particular edition sits at 48.1%.

Highland Park distils at Kirkwall on Orkney and has done so since 1798. It is one of the very few Scottish distilleries still turning part of its own malt by hand on its own malting floors, and the house matures mainly in sherry-seasoned oak. That combination is why a Highland Park rarely tastes only of smoke or only of sherry, but of both at once.

Twenty-five years shifts the balance between the two. The peat smoke loses its edge and turns earthy, the dark sherry fruit moves forward, and the wood hands over tannin and spice at a pace only Orkney's cool climate allows. Liquid disappears every year, and what remains is denser and softer than the younger expressions. Without chill filtration it keeps its full weight on the tongue.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Toasted malt and dried fruit lead, figs and dates, then orange peel and a hint of old leather. The peat lies deep and quiet underneath and never pushes forward.

    Palate

Full and rounded. Caramel and dark sherry sweetness open, followed by cocoa, tobacco leaf and dry oak spice. The smoke is warm and settled, more glowing peat than open fire.

    Finish

Long and soft. The sweetness holds for a good while, and a dry wisp of smoke closes it out alongside a trace of salt.

That Boutique-y Whisky Company is known for its colourful, illustrated labels and a playful, straightforward approach to independent bottling. Item no.: 222555-45540

Twenty-seven winters change a whisky. The peat that once stood sharp has settled into a low, steady hum, and the heather honey has had time to spread across the whole glass. Hunter Laing found the cask, left it a little longer, then emptied it in one go.

    The expert's description

Highland Park 27 Year Old The Kinship 2023 Single Orkney Malt Whisky 52.5% is a Single Orkney Malt Whisky drawn from one refill hogshead and bottled without chill filtration at its natural cask strength of 52.5%.

The Kinship is Hunter Laing's annual collection of old single casks, presented around Fèis Ìle, the whisky festival on Islay. The Laing family has worked with casks for three generations out of Glasgow, and selection follows a single rule: the cask has to carry its own age. This bottling comes not from Islay but from Kirkwall on Orkney.

Highland Park has been distilling since 1798 and still dries part of its own malt over peat cut at Hobbister Moor, just outside Kirkwall. No trees grow on Orkney, so the peat is heather and moss rather than woody debris, and the smoke it gives is floral and aromatic instead of medicinal. After 27 years that smoke has sunk deep into the spirit.

A refill hogshead has held whisky before, so it gives less wood and more distillery. That is exactly what you want when a malt has to sit for almost three decades without turning dry and tannic. The cask yielded 268 bottles, filled in 2023 at natural colour.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Baked pears and heather honey sit on top, with a ripe, earthy peat underneath that reads more like warm ash than a bonfire. Give it five minutes and beeswax and dried apricot arrive.

    Palate

Sweetness leads. Honey, mandarin and a flick of passion fruit, before black pepper and dry oak spice tighten the grip. The 52.5% registers as warmth rather than heat.

    Finish

Long and understated. The sweetness lingers, the smoke stays quietly in the back, and heather and a trace of salt close it out.

    Investment potential

High. One cask, 27 years in the warehouse and a small outturn, combined with the fact that Highland Park rarely releases spirit of this age itself. Independent bottlings of old Orkney malt grow scarcer every year.

    Item no.: 22227865388-399

A single cask, chosen with a clear purpose in mind. Calle Cask No 1 is one of the rarer Highland Park releases, where the whisky has never touched any other cask — what you taste is exactly what that one cask gave.

    Expert Description

Highland Park Calle Cask No 1 is a Single Orkney Malt Whisky from a single cask, bottled at cask strength 59.8%.

As a single cask bottling, the entire release comes from one and the same cask, without being blended with whisky from other casks. That makes every bottle part of a unique, unrepeatable batch, where the cask's full character comes through directly at high strength.

The powerful ABV means the whisky benefits from a few drops of water, which loosens up the layers of spice and fruit that the cask strength otherwise holds tightly together.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Toasted malt and dark honey, with a warm spice trail and a hint of sherried nuts.

    Palate

Intense and full-bodied, with caramel, dried fruit and a clear, warming peat.

    Finish

Some names leave no doubt who they're made for. Dannebrog is Highland Park's tribute to the Danish market — a 13-year-old release bottled at cask strength, well beyond the strength of the distillery's standard releases.

    Expert Description

Highland Park Dannebrog is a Single Orkney Malt Whisky, 13 years old and bottled at cask strength 60.3%.

The name is a direct nod to the Danish flag and to Highland Park's long relationship with the Danish whisky market. At 60.3%, it's considerably stronger than the distillery's standard releases, giving a more intense and concentrated expression of the characteristic Orkney style.

The high strength means the whisky tolerates — and often benefits from — a few drops of water, which opens up the layers of spice, fruit and peat.

    Tasting Notes

  • Highland Park Fullvolume bottle in amplifier-inspired packaging
    Item no.: 22227865388-7020

A whisky maker and a music producer have more in common than you might think — both are about balance. Highland Park Fullvolume was created with that idea as its starting point, wrapped in packaging inspired by vintage guitar amplifiers.

    Expert Description

Highland Park Fullvolume is a Single Orkney Malt Whisky matured exclusively in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at 47.2%.

The whisky was distilled in 1999 and bottled in 2017 by the distillery's then master whisky maker Gordon Motion, who used 100% ex-bourbon casks to create a brighter, more citrus-driven profile than many of Highland Park's sherry-heavy releases. The packaging is inspired by classic guitar amplifiers, where dials on the side illustrate the whisky's different flavour elements of bourbon, peat, vanilla and fruit.

Fullvolume is a limited edition release that shows a different, lighter side of the distillery's style.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Citrus and creamy vanilla, with a light smoky undertone in the background.

    Palate

Fresh and creamy, with citrus peel, vanilla and a mild, peated finish.

  • Highland Park Harald Warrior Series bottle in silver box
    Item no.: 22227865388-27

Some kings are remembered for their wars. Harald is remembered for his army, and the most feared of them all — the berserkers — who went into battle with bloodied shields. Highland Park has poured that story into a bottle where strength and sweetness meet without compromise.

    Expert Description

Highland Park Harald The Warrior Series is a Single Orkney Malt Whisky matured in a generous share of European and American oak and bottled at 40%.

Harald is named after the Orcadian Viking chieftain who, according to saga, could muster an army of berserkers — warriors so fearless their reputation reached far beyond the islands. The shield that marked his men is also the motif on the bottle's box. The whisky is part of The Warrior Series, a collection of six releases, each honouring a central figure from Orkney's Viking history.

The style is full-bodied and spiced, built on a high share of both European and American oak casks, giving the whisky a robust, oak-driven character with sweetness underneath.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Vanilla and ginger root meet dried strawberries and a calm, faintly smoky peat, with a hint of sandalwood underneath.

    Palate

Full-bodied and lightly sweet, like sponge cake with grated nutmeg and a discreet hint of lavender.

  • Highland Park HPAS 13 Year Old Single Cask bottle of dark sherried whisky
    Item no.: B22227865388-10401

The Highland Park Appreciation Society is not a club you wander into by chance. Its members have followed the distillery for years, and in 2016 they were allowed to point at one single cask in the warehouses at Kirkwall. They chose a sherry butt filled in 2003. It gave 576 bottles, and then the cask was empty.

    The expert's description

Highland Park HPAS 13 Year Old Single Orkney Malt Whisky 59.1% is a Single Orkney Malt Whisky drawn from one refill sherry butt, cask #2115, bottled undiluted at its cask strength of 59.1%.

HPAS stands for the Highland Park Appreciation Society, the society for the distillery's most committed followers. The bottling belongs to Highland Park's Single Cask Series, where one cask is emptied and sold as it stands, and this particular cask was picked for the society. The spirit went into wood in 2003 and into glass in 2016.

A butt is among the largest casks in Scottish maturation at around 500 litres, and a refill cask has held whisky before. It gives up colour and wood more slowly, so after thirteen years the distillery character still leads, with the dried fruit of sherry framing it rather than covering it. The cask yielded 576 bottles.

Cask strength makes this a dense dram. Everything the wood handed over sits in the glass without a drop of water, and the smoke from Highland Park's own peated malt has far more room than in the core range.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Raisins, dark orange marmalade and toasted malt. Below sits a dry, sooty peat smoke and a note of leather. The alcohol prickles for the first few seconds and settles after a couple of minutes in the glass.

    Palate

Thick and oily. Dates, dark chocolate and clove, then a clear edge of pepper and a smoke that tastes of hearth ash rather than tar.

    Finish

Long and warm. The dried fruit of the sherry hangs on, the spice tightens, and a dry, salty note closes the whole thing.

High. The whisky comes from one cask with an outturn of 576 bottles, it was bottled for a closed circle in 2016 and never reached open trade. Single casks from Highland Park at cask strength are among the releases collectors track most closely, and an empty cask cannot be refilled.

    Did you know?

The rise the distillery stands on is called High Park, and it is linked to Magnus Eunson, a church officer who by local account distilled illicitly at night and hid his casks beneath the pulpit. A licence for the site came only much later.

Ragnvald was the Viking age's great traveller — a sailor, explorer and trader who brought spices, fabrics and gemstones home from across Europe. Highland Park has given him a whisky that, like the man himself, holds more layers than first expected.

    Expert Description

Highland Park Ragnvald The Warrior Series is a Single Orkney Malt Whisky matured in a combination of European and American oak and bottled at 44.6%.

Ragnvald was one of the Viking age's most well-travelled figures — a skilled sailor and explorer whose trading voyages brought exotic spices, textiles and gemstones back to Orkney. The whisky balances the best of European oak with a smaller share of American oak, giving a rounded, spiced profile.

Ragnvald is part of The Warrior Series and was originally created for Global Retail, though a limited number of bottles have found their way to the Danish market.

    Expert Description

Highland Park Single Cask Grundtvig is a Single Orkney Malt Whisky, 13 years old, from a single cask and bottled at cask strength 61.3%.

The whisky is the first in a Founders Series of single cask bottlings, named after N.F.S. Grundtvig — priest, poet and one of the most influential figures in Danish cultural history. As a single cask release, the entire batch comes from one and the same cask, giving a concentrated and unaltered version of Highland Park's style.

The high cask strength means the whisky benefits from a little water, which opens up the layers of spice and fruit.

  • Highland Park Thor bottle in wooden Viking longship frame
    Item no.: 505956-498796-2

Orkney sat under Norse rule for close to 600 years, and the inheritance is still there in the place names, the burial mounds and the way the islanders speak. Highland Park pulled that history forward, put a god's name on the label and let the strength do the talking.

    The expert's description

Highland Park Thor 16 Year Old The Valhalla Collection Single Orkney Malt Scotch Whisky 52.1% is a Single Orkney Malt Scotch Whisky matured for 16 years in oak casks and bottled at 52.1%.

Thor opened The Valhalla Collection, a set of four releases named after figures from Norse mythology. The god of thunder came first, followed one at a time by Loki, Freya and Odin, and the series has long since closed. The outturn for Thor was 23,000 bottles spread across the world.

The bottle sits inside a frame of curved wooden staves shaped after the prow of a longship. The packaging is not decoration for its own sake. Kirkwall, the town the distillery stands above, was founded by Norsemen, and Highland Park has built its identity on that connection for decades rather than on the Scottish Highlands its name suggests.

At 52.1% this sits well above the distillery's core range, and you feel it. The malt stands closer together, the peat smoke takes up more room, and the oak spice steps forward instead of waiting in the background. In return it takes water better than most.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Toasted malt and dark honey sit heavy in the glass, with ripe peach and a trace of red berries above them. The peat announces itself as warm spice rather than bonfire.

    Palate

Powerful, but it does not hit. Caramel and honey arrive first, then ginger, cinnamon and dry oak spice, with an earthy peat smoke running underneath and holding the whole thing together.

    Finish

Long and slightly dry. The ginger lingers alongside vanilla and oak, and the smoke is the last thing to let go.

Thorfinn once ruled the whole of Orkney and carried the nickname "the Mighty". Highland Park has given the same title to one of the most sherry-driven expressions in The Warrior Series — a whisky that doesn't ask permission before filling the glass with dark fruit and spiced oak.

    Expert Description

Highland Park Thorfinn The Warrior Series is a Single Orkney Malt Whisky matured in European sherry oak and bottled at 45.1%.

The whisky is named after Earl Thorfinn Sigurdsson, who according to saga once controlled the whole of Orkney. Unlike several other releases in The Warrior Series, Thorfinn is matured exclusively in European, Spanish oak, of which more than half are first-fill sherry casks — an unusually high share that gives the whisky its dark, concentrated character.

The result is one of the most powerful and sherry-driven releases in the series, built for the enthusiast seeking depth and complexity over lightness.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Cedarwood, camphor and mango meet coriander, a spicy smokiness and the scent of vanilla pods.

Some whiskies give away their origin in brackets. "(HP)" on this label is Signatory Vintage's quiet nod, without breaking any confidentiality — a single sherry-cask experience from Orkney, bottled at full cask strength after seventeen years on oak.

    Expert Description

Orkney 17 (HP) 2005/2023 Signatory Vintage 17 Year Old is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky from a single Oloroso sherry butt, bottled at cask strength 55.3%.

The name Orkney, paired with the bracketed hint (HP), is Signatory Vintage's discreet compromise: the distillery cannot be named, but the cask code DRU17/A63 and the nickname point unmistakably to Highland Park. The whisky spent its entire maturation in a single cask, number 27 — nothing blended in, nothing added.

The cask was filled on 7 May 2005 and bottled on 17 February 2023, yielding 612 bottles with natural colour and no further dilution.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Raisins, orange peel and dark chocolate sit on top of a light peat smoke, with a hint of sea salt hinting at its coastal origin.

    Palate

Rich and sherry-driven, with fig, damson jam and a warm clove spice, underscored by a muted, mineral smokiness.

  • Orkney 17 HP Signatory Vintage bottle of dark sherry matured whisky
    Item no.: 22227865480-67093-0168

One Oloroso butt, filled on a May day in 2005 and left alone until seventeen winters had passed. No water added, no colouring, no other whisky blended in. Just the one cask and the dark, spiced mark Orkney left on it.

    The expert's description

Orkney 17 (HP) 2005/2023 Signatory Vintage is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured for seventeen years in a single Oloroso Sherry Butt and bottled at cask strength, 55.6%.

Orkney is the code independent bottlers use when they have bought casks from Highland Park but may not print the distillery name on the label. The letters HP in the product name are as close to a pointer as the trade gets. The cask carries the number DRU17/A63 and goes by the designation Cask #8.

It was filled on 7 May 2005 and emptied on 23 January 2023, yielding 596 bottles of natural colour whisky. Several sister casks were distilled on the same day, but each one matured on its own, and this one landed at the spicier end of the family.

An Oloroso Sherry Butt holds around 500 litres and is the largest cask size in common use in Scotland. Less wood in relation to liquid means slower maturation, so after seventeen years the sherry reads as dried fruit and nuts rather than as a layer of sweetness laid on top. Beneath it, Orkney heather peat runs as a thin, mineral smoke.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Raisins, orange peel and a seam of dark chocolate. Underneath sits a dry, mineral smoke, closer to wet stone than to a bonfire, with a trace of old leather.

    Palate

Full and warm from the first sip. Dried fig and vanilla ride on a spiced sherry core of black pepper and clove, and the smoke shows up only at the end, a thin thread drawn through the sweetness.

    Finish

Long. The sherry sweetness lingers while salt and smoke draw a cool, maritime line across it and leave the mouth dry.

    Investment potential

High. A Single Cask drawn from one Oloroso Sherry Butt can neither be repeated nor topped up, and Orkney bottlings with seventeen years behind them and cask strength in the bottle are exactly what collectors hunt for.

Some whiskies whisper their origin instead of shouting it. Secret Orkney keeps its distillery under wraps on the label, but not in the glass — a single-batch bottling from Signatory Vintage, thirteen years in the making on Orkney's salt-swept air.

    Expert Description

Secret Orkney 2009/2023 Signatory Vintage 13 Year Old is a Single Malt Scotch Whisky matured in refill hogsheads and bottled at 46%.

The distillery behind the discreet name cannot be printed on the label, but Orkney is home to only two distilleries, and the cask codes point firmly towards Highland Park. Signatory Vintage filled the whisky into a run of refill hogsheads, cask numbers DRU 17/A67-9/-10/-13/-21, without adding colouring or chill filtering before bottling.

The whisky was distilled on 31 March 2009 and left to mature until January 2023, when 483 bottles were filled — a small, hand-picked release that shows Orkney character in an unfiltered, natural state.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Heather blossom and a whisper of smoky peat meet salt sea air and ripe apple, with a soft honey sweetness underneath tying it all together.

    Palate

Soft and lightly oiled, with citrus peel, toasted malt and a warm spice run of ginger and clove. The natural colour keeps the flavour clean and direct.

    Finish

Medium in length, gently peated towards the end, with a lingering heather sweetness and a touch of salted caramel that fades slowly.

About Highland Park Whisky

Highland Park combines two things that rarely go hand in hand: an approachable, rounded sweetness that makes it easy to get into, and a depth and complexity from its own floor malting and heather peat that serious collectors prize highly. About 20 percent of the barley the distillery uses is still malted on its own floors, a rarity in an industry where most have long outsourced that part of the process.

History & Background

The distillery was founded in 1798, according to legend by local whisky smuggler Magnus Eunson, said to have hidden his illegal still under the church pulpit. After several changes of ownership through the 1800s, Highland Park became part of Highland Distilleries, later Edrington Group, which still owns the distillery today. Over the decades it has built a reputation as one of Scotland's most consistent quality producers.

Production & Style

Highland Park's signature comes from local peat that has absorbed salty Atlantic winds for centuries, giving a heathery, more aromatic smoke character than Islay's medicinal smoke. The whisky matures for at least 12 years in oak casks, where the fiery new spirit gradually softens into the distinctive, rounded Highland Park style.

Signature Style

Heather-smoked, Honeyed, Balanced
Aromatic heather peat, honey and dried fruit merge in a balanced profile that's rarely too intense or too delicate.
