PennyPacker Whiskey

Rye whiskey named after an eccentric Pennsylvania governor. The name Pennypacker carries an old-fashioned ring of American enterprise and local pride, a mood the brand deliberately plays on in its story. The whiskey is aimed at drinkers who prefer rye's spicy edge over bourbon's sweetness.

    Expert description

PennyPacker 2 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is an American bourbon, matured for 2 years and bottled at 40%, from PennyPacker. The brand was originally introduced by the American Distilling Company in Pekin, Illinois, in the 1970s, purely as an export product designed with American imagery, including a US flag and a motif of Abraham Lincoln, to appeal to European consumers. The mash bill consists of roughly 70% corn plus rye and barley. In 1972, the brand was acquired by Borco-Marken, and PennyPacker became the best-selling bourbon in the European market throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Today the brand is owned by Heaven Hill, which reintroduced it to the US market in 2013.

About PennyPacker

PennyPacker is a straight rye whiskey whose name honours Samuel Pennypacker, a colourful Pennsylvania governor of the early 1900s. For newcomers, it's an accessible rye with a classic, spicy Pennsylvania style, while connoisseurs should know that, like several other newer American labels, the brand is likely built on sourced whiskey rather than a named home distillery, making the story behind the name more interesting than the production history itself.

History & Background

PennyPacker is marketed as a craft bourbon label, but very little has been made public about when and where production actually began. Like several other newer American whiskey labels, PennyPacker is likely assembled from sourced bourbon rather than distilled from scratch at a named home distillery, and the name draws on a classic, slightly old-fashioned American ring.

Production & Style

The whiskey is distilled from a rye-heavy mash in the classic Pennsylvania style.

Signature Style

Spicy, Peppery, Dry
The whiskey offers a spicy, peppery character with a dry finish.
