Don Papa Rum

On the Philippine island of Negros once lived a revolutionary named Dionisio Magbuelas, known to his followers as 'Papa Isio'. In 2012, a new rum borrowed his nickname and his story of rebellion against colonial power, wrapped in a bottle colored like raw, unbleached sugar. Nobody expected such a young rum to conquer the world's bar shelves within just a few years, but Don Papa did exactly that.

  • Black bottle with golden label and Filipino pattern from Don Papa
    Item no.: 22227865378-9003

Toasted coconut, mango and a touch of chili from Negros – Don Papa's tribute to the island the whole brand is rooted in.

    Expert description

Don Papa Alon Single Island is a Philippine Spirit Drink made exclusively from sugarcane and molasses grown on Negros and bottled at 40%.

Alon is a limited edition release, flavoured with toasted coconut, jackfruit and warm spices, all inspired by Negros' nickname "Sugarlandia" – the island that has historically produced a large share of the Philippines' sugar. Because Alon uses ingredients from this one island only, it stands apart from Don Papa's broader, wider-sourced blends.

    Tasting notes

    Nose

Tropical and aromatic with toasted coconut, tangy citrus, roasted pineapple, mango, lychee, papaya, jasmine and vanilla.

    Palate

Rich, unctuous and creamy with ripe fruit and an underlying spiciness.

    Finish

Dry and spicy, with a hint of chili and exotic spices lingering.

  • Dark rum bottle with Filipino label, Don Papa Gayuma
    Item no.: 222275555-66639

Gayuma means "love potion" in Filipino – a rum that seduces with smoke from Islay and sweetness from Rioja, born on the slopes of the dormant volcano Kanlaon.

    Expert Description

Don Papa Gayuma is a Filipino Rum made from 100% Negros sugarcane molasses and bottled at 40%.

The rum first matures in the volcanic climate at the foot of Mount Kanlaon on the island of Negros, before being finished in a double finish in ex-Rioja and Islay whisky casks. This gives Gayuma its dark amber colour and a character that blends the rum's natural sweetness with a distinct touch of peat smoke – an unusual combination for a Filipino rum. The Don Papa brand is named after Papa Isio, a Filipino freedom fighter and local hero figure from Negros.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Powerful and full, with peat, vanilla and orange peel, supported by dried flowers, delicate oak and dried fruit.

    Palate

The smoke wraps around creamy tones of exotic fruit and vanilla, while light orange zest and deep cocoa unfold with a touch of clove and mint.

    Finish

Smoky and spicy finish moving toward cocoa, with red and tropical fruit, before the peat takes over in a long conclusion.

    Item no.: 22227865378-80

At the foot of the Kanlaon volcano on Negros, this rum matures for at least seven years in a hot, humid climate that quickly draws character from the cask.

    Expert Description

Don Papa Mount Kanlaon Small Batch is a Philippine Rum matured for a minimum of 7 years, bottled at 40%.

The rum is distilled and matured in small batches at the foot of Mount Kanlaon on the island of Negros. About Don Papa Rum

Don Papa is a Filipino rum from the island of Negros, known for its smooth, sweet style and rapid international success.

History & Background

Don Papa launched in 2012 and is named after Dionisio Magbuelas, a local revolutionary on the island of Negros known as 'Papa Isio', who resisted both Spanish and American colonial powers. The name and the story of the rebel gave the rum a narrative reaching far beyond taste alone, helping the brand become an international success in record time. The rum is distilled from molasses grown on Negros' fertile sugarcane plantations, a region with a long tradition of sugar production, and aged in oak casks in the tropical Philippine climate. The distinctive bottle, with its rough, sugar-colored surface and hand-cut lettering, has become as recognizable as the rum itself, helping Don Papa stand out sharply in a market dominated by Caribbean names.

Production & Style

The rum is distilled from molasses from Negros's sugar cane plantations and aged in oak casks in the tropical Filipino climate.
