Dallas Dhu Whisky

Dallas Dhu distilled whisky in Forres from 1899 until 1983, when it finally closed after decades of changing owners and declining relevance. Rather than being demolished, the site was preserved as a museum, and today visitors can walk through the entire distillation process exactly as it looked when whisky still ran through the pipes. It's one of the few places where you can experience a complete, authentic Victorian distillery without a single drop of production.

    Item no.: B22227865438-64

Dallas Dhu stopped production in 1983 and was never demolished. The distillery stands today as a museum with all the equipment in place — but without a drop of new spirit since the Thatcher years.

    Expert description

Dallas Dhu 12 years Gordon & MacPhail is a Highland Malt Scotch Whisky bottled at 40%.

The distillery sits near Forres and closed in 1983 during the great wave of closures, when overproduction brought a string of Scottish houses to their knees. The buildings were preserved and are run today as a museum, which makes Dallas Dhu one of the few places you can walk through a complete distillery that no longer produces. Gordon & MacPhail in Elgin has bottled whisky from across Scotland since 1895 and is among the most important sources of bottles from closed distilleries.

About Dallas Dhu

Dallas Dhu is a former Speyside distillery from 1899 in Forres, which closed in 1983 and has since been preserved as a museum. For a newcomer, it's above all a window into how a complete distillery operated a hundred years ago; for the connoisseur, the last bottles from Dallas Dhu are genuine relics - a closed source that can never be replenished, making any original bottle a preserved piece of whisky history.

Whisky from the distillery exists only through independent bottlings of its final stocks.

History & Background

Dallas Dhu was founded in 1898 under the name Dallasmore by Glasgow-based Wright and Grieg, designed by the renowned distillery architect Charles Doig. The distillery produced malt mainly for blends throughout most of its life and closed for good in 1983, but the buildings were preserved as a museum and are today run by Historic Environment Scotland, while the last remaining casks are gradually sold off by independent bottlers.

Production & Style

The distillery worked in the classic Speyside style, focusing on a full-bodied, sweet spirit.

Signature Style

Full-Bodied, Sweet, Round
The whisky offers a full-bodied, sweet character with a round finish.
