Rittenhouse Whiskey

Rittenhouse is the rye whiskey bartenders kept alive when the rest of America had forgotten what rye once tasted like. When the brand won the title of North America's best whiskey in 2006, it marked a rediscovery for an entire industry, not just an award for one bottle.

Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, is the oldest continuously operating distillery in the United States. The site was first built as a commercial distillery in 1858 and later taken over by Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr., often called 'the father of the modern bourbon industry'. About Rittenhouse

Rittenhouse Rye was founded in 1934 by Harry Publicker and is today produced by Heaven Hill at its Bernheim distillery in Louisville, Kentucky, following a classic straight rye whiskey recipe aged four years. The brand played a central role in reviving rye whiskey as a category in the 2000s, as bartenders across the US rediscovered rye's sharp, spicy character for classic cocktails like the Manhattan and Sazerac. Collectors regard the 100-proof edition, which won "North American Whiskey of the Year" in 2006, as an important historical milestone, while newcomers get an authentic, affordable entry into American rye whiskey.

History & Background

Rittenhouse Rye was founded in 1934 by Harry Publicker, shortly after the end of Prohibition, at a time when rye whiskey was still a common part of the American cocktail repertoire. Over the 20th century rye's popularity fell drastically in favour of bourbon and other lighter spirits, and many rye brands disappeared from the market entirely. Rittenhouse survived thanks to Heaven Hill, which continued production at its Bernheim distillery, and when bartenders rediscovered classic cocktail recipes in the 2000s, Rittenhouse was one of the few authentic rye whiskeys still around, making it an instant favourite in the revived cocktail scene.

History & Background

There is not much publicly available history on Rittenhouse, and the house keeps a relatively low profile about its origins. What is clear is its position in the range, reflected in the style and character described above.

Production & Style

The whiskey is produced and bottled under the Bottled-in-Bond Act, which requires at least four years of ageing and a fixed strength of 50% ABV.

Signature Style

Spicy, Robust, Dry
The whiskey offers a spicy, robust character with a dry finish.
