Mandois Champagne

A family-run champagne producer where generations of growers have tended their own vineyards at the heart of the region. Mandois works by a simple philosophy: if you own the land yourself, you can also vouch for what's in the bottle. That makes for a champagne with a more personal, less polished character than the big trading houses.

    Item no.: 059763-615-443

Champagne Mandois dates back to 1735, when winegrower and cooper Jean Mandois is first mentioned in the records. Nine generations later, the house still stands in Pierry, near Épernay - and this Blanc de Noirs is a tribute to that long history.

    Expert's Description

Mandois Blanc de Noirs 2018 Brut is a Sparkling Wine from Champagne, France made from 100% Pinot Noir, bottled at 12% ABV.

Victor-Auguste Mandois moved the house to Pierry in 1905, installing both a press and a cellar on the property - an unconventional move at the time. Today the ninth generation runs the house's 33 hectares, a large share of which is certified organic, making Mandois one of Champagne's largest organic growers. This 1er Cru Blanc de Noirs is made entirely from Pinot Noir from the 2018 harvest, vinified 80% in steel and 20% in oak, and rested more than four years on the lees before disgorgement. The dosage is low, just 6 grams of sugar per litre.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe red berries with a touch of toasted bread from the long lees ageing.

    Palate

Full and direct, with the Pinot Noir grape's characteristic power and a firm, mineral undertone.

    Finish

Dry and long, the low dosage clear in the clean, non-sweet finish.

    Serving & Food Pairing

Serve at 8-10°C in a champagne glass. The body makes it suitable for a whole meal - from shellfish to red meat - not just as an aperitif.

Where Blanc de Noirs is the house's purest statement, Brut Origine is Mandois' everyday cuvée - the one that shows what the house fundamentally stands for. Nine generations in Pierry have taught the family that the best argument is what's in the glass.

    Expert's Description

Mandois Brut Origine is a Sparkling Wine from Champagne, France made from Meunier, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, bottled at 12% ABV.

The Origine cuvée blends the house's three classic grape varieties and represents the core of Mandois' style - genuine, thorough craftsmanship without the big gestures. Champagne Mandois dates back to 1735 and has been based in Pierry since 1905, where the ninth generation now farms 33 hectares, a large share of it certified organic. Over the years, the house's Champagnes have earned a reputation as a preferred supplier to French Michelin-starred restaurants.

    Finish

Clean and refreshing, of moderate length.

The same Origine cuvée as the house's 75 cl bottle, but in magnum format - the size many sommeliers prefer, since the Champagne matures more calmly and evenly behind the larger glass wall.

    Expert's Description

Mandois Brut Origine Magnum is a Sparkling Wine from Champagne, France made from Meunier, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, bottled at 12% ABV.

Origine is Mandois' classic cuvée, blending the house's three grape varieties, and represents the core of the style from a Champagne house with roots back to 1735, run today by the ninth generation in Pierry. In magnum, the Champagne has more room to develop slowly, often giving an even more integrated result - and the format is a natural choice when several guests are sharing a bottle.

Magnum bottles generally have a better reputation among collectors, because the smaller ratio of air to wine under the cork gives a slower, more even maturation.

Not all Champagne has to be bone dry. Mandois Demi Sec is the house's answer for those who prefer more sweetness in the glass - still built on the same 1735 roots as the rest of the range.

    Expert's Description

Mandois Demi Sec is a Sparkling Wine from Champagne, France made from the house's classic grape varieties, bottled at 12% ABV.

Demi Sec means half-dry and carries a dosage of around 35 grams of sugar per litre, giving it a noticeably sweeter style than the house's Brut cuvées. Champagne Mandois dates back to 1735 and is run today by the ninth generation in Pierry - the tradition of genuine craftsmanship stays the same, whether the Champagne ends up dry or sweet.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Ripe, golden fruit with a touch of honey.

    Palate

Rich and round, with clear sweetness balanced by the Champagne's natural acidity.

    Finish

    Softly rounded and lingering.

    Serving & Food Pairing

Serve at 8-10°C in a champagne glass. Demi Sec pairs beautifully with desserts, fruit tarts or foie gras - or enjoy it on its own as a sweeter way to end the evening.

Demi Sec literally means "half-dry" in French - but at 35 grams of sugar per litre, it's actually one of the sweeter styles within Champagne.

No dosage, nowhere to hide. Mandois Zero Dosage is Champagne in its purest form - just the grape, the cellar and time.

    Expert's Description

Mandois Zero Dosage Brut is a Sparkling Wine from Champagne, France made from the house's classic grape varieties, bottled at 12% ABV.

Zero Dosage - also called Brut Nature or Brut Zéro - means no sugar is added after the second fermentation. That places real demands on the grapes' own ripeness and balance, since there's no sweetness to mask any rough edges. For Mandois, with roots back to 1735 and the ninth generation at the helm in Pierry, it's an exercise in letting the terroir and the craftsmanship speak for themselves, completely unfiltered.

    Tasting Notes

    Nose

Clean and direct, with a clear imprint of the grape itself rather than sweetness.

    Palate

Sharp and mineral, with acidity standing fully upfront with nothing to soften it.

    Finish

Dry and long, with a clean, almost taut close.

    Serving & Food Pairing

Serve at 8-10°C in a champagne glass. The sharp, dry style makes it a natural match for oysters, raw fish and other shellfish with a clean, salty character.

Zero Dosage Champagnes have earned their own following among sommeliers precisely because they can't hide behind sweetness - the grape and terroir have to stand on their own.

About Mandois Champagne

Mandois is a family-run champagne house producing its champagne exclusively from grapes grown on its own vineyards in the region. For the newcomer, it's a natural way into the idea of 'grower champagne', where the taste is less standardised and more shaped by the specific vintage and terroir. For the collector, houses like Mandois represent the movement that has gained ground in Champagne over the last 20 years, with independent family producers increasingly challenging the dominance of the big, publicly listed champagne houses.

History & Background

The house draws on a long family tradition of grape-growing in Champagne, where independent, family-owned producers have historically played an important role alongside the big trading houses. The Mandois family has cultivated vineyards in the region across several generations, with each generation typically passing on both land and craft to the next, unlike the large houses' model of buying in grapes from hundreds of suppliers. This continuity gives the house tighter, more personal control over quality from field to bottle than most of the well-known champagne names.

Production & Style

Mandois uses the classic méthode champenoise, emphasising the grapes' own character through close, personal control of the entire production process.

Signature Style

Fresh, Fruity, Authentic
The taste offers a fresh, authentic character with clear fruitiness and a personal, earthy profile.
